SCHOOL DIVISION EMPLOYEES EARN PHYSICAL FITNESS AWARDS

Fifty-seven Prince William County Public Schools employees have been recognized for their participation in the 1997-98 Governor's Physical Fitness Activity Award Program. The Physical Fitness Activity Award program is endorsed by the Governor's Commission on Physical Fitness and Sports and was originally developed in May of 1982. Each participant will receive a certificate signed by Governor James Gilmore. The purpose of the program is to motivate all school personnel to become more physically active throughout life and to emphasize regular physical activity rather than outstanding performance.

According to James Council, supervisor of physical education, "the challenge of the program is to make a commitment to wellness through active and regular participation in physical activities. Earning the award means that the staff member has invested time and effort to meet the challenge of personal wellness. The Award recognizes this achievement, and the fact that the staff member is a part of a statewide effort for a healthier Virginia."

To earn the award, participants were required to accumulate forty minutes or more of moderately intense physical activity per day, over a period of 16 weeks, and to keep a log of their activities. The employees listed below earned gold, silver and bronze awards, based on the number of days of participation.
