COUNTY STUDENTS DOMINATE ART COMPETITION
Students from Osbourn Park and Brentsville District high schools took home the bulk of awards at the Tenth Congressional District Art Competition held recently in The Plains under the auspices of Congressman Frank R. Wolf. Vincent Martorana, a student at Osbourn Park High School earned "Best of Show" honors for a painting done in acrylics, while two of four "Judges Choice" awards were presented to Kimberly Parks, also of Osbourn Park, for a work in acrylics, and Sara White of Brentsville who was recognized for a collage entitled "Stormy." The pieces noted above were untitled.
The competition was conducted as part of An Artistic Discovery, an annual Congressional High School Art Competition. A total of twenty-two schools participated. Contests are conducted locally at the discretion of each member of Congress within broad guidelines established by the House Office Building Commission. Last year a total of 309 members of Congress conducted local competitions. Winning artworks from each district will be displayed as part of the national exhibition in the Cannon Tunnel leading to the United States Capitol through the end of May. Since the competition was first launched in 1982, nearly 4,000 local contests have been conducted that have involved more than 650,000 high school students.
Other Prince William County Public Schools award recipients include Jessica A. Green, Brentsville District High School, who earned a first place award for her collage. A reception for winners was held at the Manassas Dance Company on May 16.
