FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE N.R. #102, 12/4/02 Date: December 4, 2002
STUDENT NOMINATED TO COMPETE IN PRINCIPAL’S LEADERSHIP AWARD Merrium Ahmad, an Osbourn Park Senior High School senior, has been nominated to compete in the national Principal’s Leadership Award (PLA) scholarship program, sponsored by the National Association of Secondary Principals (NASSP). Herff Jones, Inc., funds the PLA program. Tim Healy, Principal of Osbourn Park High School, announced the nomination, which places Ahmad in the national competition. One hundred fifty national PLA winners will be chosen this spring to receive $1,000 college scholarships. High school principals from across the United States could nominate one of their student leaders. Nominees were selected based on their leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience, and academic record. They also were required to write an essay. “Ahmad has demonstrated exemplary achievement in her academic work and service to her school and community,” said Gerald N. Tirozzi, executive director, NASSP. “She’s a fine example of the outstanding caliber of young people in America’s high schools.” In considering both co-curricular activities and academic performance, the PLA scholarship recognizes the importance of a well-rounded education. Co-curricular activities are an essential part of the school curriculum. While at Osbourn Park High School, Ahmad has been the president of the French Honor Society, as well as a member of the National Honor Society and the Key Club, and has received an academic letter each year. Outside of school, she is captain of a competition dance team. Ahmad also volunteers her time performing with a dance troupe providing entertainment for local senior centers. She is also dance instructor at George Mason University Freedom Fitness and Aquatic Center. Next fall Ahmad hopes to attend the University of Virginia and is considering a career in education. NASSP, the preeminent school leadership organization, serves as
the national voice for middle level and high school principals, assistant
principals, and aspiring school leaders. NASSP promotes the intellectual
growth, academic achievement, character development, leadership development,
and physical well being of youth through its programs and student leadership
services. NASSP administers the National Honor Society, The National
Junior Honor Society, and the National Association of student Councils.
NASSP is also the sponsor of the National Student Leadership Week.
