LOCAL EDUCATORS RECOGNIZED Jonelle Craig, a speech-language pathologist at Yorkshire Elementary School, recently presented at the American Speech-Language Hearing Association’s annual conference held in New Orleans. Ms. Craig presented the findings of her master’s thesis entitled “Diagnosing Stuttering: An Examination of Inter-Method Agreement’ which she completed as a graduate student at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. An article written by Carol Lupton, a seventh grade language arts teacher at Marsteller Middle School, “Ideals vs. Reality in the Classroom,” was published in the December 2001 issue of The Education Digest. The article was condensed from the April 2001 issue of the Virginia Journal of Education. Jo Ellen Suter, driver’s education teacher at Osbourn Park High School,
is President of the Virginia Association of Driver Education and Traffic
Safety for the 2000-2003 term.
Pat Puttre, Principal of Saunders Middle School, was a runner
up for the Greater Washington Reading Council’s Principal of the Year for
Reading Award. The nomination recognized Puttre’s support of and commitment
to the reading program at Saunders. She helped plan and implement the program,
which alternates intense small group instruction with computer based skill
support. Puttre was one of three administrators recognized and the
only one at the secondary level.
Mollie Rosenberg producer/writer/host of the school division’s monthly television program, School Focus, was featured in the November 2001 issue of AV Video Multimedia Producer magazine as one of the Top 100 Producers of 2001. Karen Poindexter, Principal of Marsteller Middle School, presented “Fifty Things for a Middle School” at the National Middle School (NMSA) Convention in November. She was also elected to the Board of the Virginia Middle School Association. The Marsteller Middle School Choir will be on the cover of Middle School Journal in January. The choir performed at the National Middle School Convention under the direction of Dorothy French. Benjamin D. Swecker, Supervisor of Media Production Services,
is the recipient of the Region IV 2001 Educational Technology Leadership
Award. Region IV includes the school districts of Alexandria City,
Culpeper County, Falls Church City, Loudoun County, Manassas Park City,
Prince William County, Warren County, Arlington County, Fairfax County,
Fauquier County, Madison County, Orange County, Rappahannock County, Winchester
City, Clarke County, Fairfax City, Frederick County, Manassas City, Page
County, and Shenandoah County. Swecker was honored at the Education
Technology Leadership Conference held on December 12-14 at the Hotel Roanoke
and Conference Center.
