STONEWALL JACKSON HIGH ON NEWSWEEK’S TOP 100 SCHOOLS LIST
Stonewall Jackson High School, located in western Prince William County, is listed in Newsweek magazine’s March 13, 2000, issue as one of the top 100 high schools in America. The article by Jay Mathews ranks the Prince William County public school as 96 among those schools "that try the hardest to involve students in [Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate] courses and tests." Stonewall Jackson was the first of two county high schools to have an International Baccalaureate program, having started its program in 1993. The Newsweek ranking is based on the number of AP or IB tests taken by all students at a school in 1999, divided by the number of graduating seniors.
"The teachers and kids deserve this recognition the most," said Steve Constantino, principal of Stonewall Jackson, when he announced the news to students and staff on Tuesday morning. "The strength of what we do and who we are is our students," Constantino said. Stonewall Jackson has 2200 students and about 430 seniors.
Woodbridge High School in Woodbridge, Virginia, is among the top 300 schools on Newsweek’s web site list of the best high schools in America. Woodbridge is the largest high school in the Commonwealth of Virginia, with 3,000 students and over 720 seniors. "Our students and teachers are very focused," said Pam Brown, the school’s principal. "I’m proud of their hard work."
