SCHOOL DIVISION EARNS MERITORIOUS BUDGET AWARD
Prince William County Public Schools has been awarded the Meritorious Budget Award by the Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) International for the fourth consecutive year. The Meritorious Budget Award recognizes the school division’s 1999-2000 school year approved budget document for "excellence in the preparation and issuance of its school system budget."
The Meritorious Budget Award Program is an international awards program created by ASBO to assist school business administrators in achieving a standard of excellence in budget presentation.
In announcing the award, Don I. Tharpe, ASBO executive director, said "The award represents a significant achievement by Prince William County Schools. It reflects the commitment of the government body and staff to meeting the highest standards of school budgeting. In order to receive the budget award, the jurisdiction had to satisfy specific guidelines for effective budget presentation recognized by school business officials throughout North America."
The Meritorious Budget award is only conferred on school systems which meet or exceed the program’s thirty-item criteria. No other organization or award program is specifically designed to enhance school budgeting and to honor a school division for its work.
ASBO International is a professional association of approximately 6,000 members which provides a number of programs and services to promote the highest standards of school business practices, professional growth and the effective use of educational resources. Association members are school division employees at the local, state and national levels specializing in areas of administration and school business management.
In 1997, on its first attempt at entry, Prince William County Public Schools became the first school division in Virginia to earn ASBO’s Meritorious Budget Award. The school division also earned the award in 1998 and 1999.
