School Employees Honored For
Service
“At one time I could tell you the name of every school employee in the county,” says Carolyn Gregg, “and I could tell you where they were located.” Gregg, who has worked for Prince William County Public Schools for thirty-five years, will be among 317 employees recognized for 20, 25, 30, 35 or 40 years of service at a School Board reception April 11. The employees will receive service pins, and, in a program new to the school division, service bonuses of $400 (for 20 years) or $500 (for 25 years and above). Employees who have completed five, ten and fifteen years of service will be recognized at their work locations with pins and bonuses of $100, $200 and $300, respectively.
Gregg is currently serving in the curriculum services department as secretary to the supervisor of science and math and the supervisor of driver education and athletics. Hired by former superintendent Stuart Beville in 1962 as an assistant to his secretary, Gregg split her time between secretarial duties and manning the school division’s switchboard at the old office on Tudor Lane in Manassas. “Mr. Beville asked me if I was sure that I wasn’t going to get married and I assured him I wasn’t. Eighteen months later I was engaged,” Gregg says, with her ever-present smile.
Over the years, Gregg’s responsibilities grew with the school division. She served simultaneously as part-time personnel secretary, part-time secretary to the superintendent of construction, part-time payroll and part-time secretary to the school division’s only school nurse and its one visiting teacher. In the late 1960’s she was the first person to enter data into the computers being introduced in the personnel department. Aside from an eighteen-month break immediately after her marriage, and another ten months after the birth of her son, Gregg has been at the school division’s central offices ever since. She spent fourteen years in personnel, rising to the position of certification specialist.
“I’ve enjoyed every bit of it,” Gregg says. “It certainly doesn’t seem like thirty-five years. Every boss I’ve ever had has been great.” She has no plans to retire. “I’ve talked to people who have retired and after four weeks, they’ve done everything and they’re ready to come back. I think I may go for forty.”
Gregg’s husband Paul is completing twenty-one years with the school division. Her son Tony, who will receive a law enforcement degree in December, and his wife Karen, a Prince William County science teacher, will make her a grandmother in May.
