Three Prince William County schools have earned grants to support their
educational programs. Bel Air Elementary School in Dale City has received
a $350 grant from ACME Contractors.The grant will partially support “Family
Reading at Bel Air,” an in-home reading program. The program incorporates
reading strategies with parent involvement.Marleta London, reading specialist
at Bel Air, wrote the grant proposal.
Sinclair Elementary School, located in Manassas, has received a grant under the Federal Promoting Safe and Stable Families Act in the Amount of $300. The purpose of this federally funded grant program is to support primary prevention and early intervention efforts for children and families. The funds are being made available as mini-grants through Prince William County’s Community Policy and Management Team. Sinclair plans to use the funds to purchase supplies and materials for a collaborative reading program between home and school for students in kindergarten through second grade with disabilities. The grant proposal was written by Melissa Del Rio, teacher of the learning disabled.
Henderson Elementary School in Montclair has received a Grant in the Arts from the Washington Post Educational Foundation in the amount of $300 for its project, “The Rainforest – A multisensory, interdisciplinary arts approach.” The project will be a yearlong study of the rainforest by special education students in two self-contained classes. Activities include field trips to the rainforest exhibit at the Baltimore Aquarium and the Rainforest Café, a food tasting luncheon featuring products of the rainforest, a musical production including songs and dance with backdrops and costumes created by the students. Teachers Sandra Scorby and Thompson Acquah submitted the grant proposal.
