OSBOURN PARK STUDENT WINS STATE SAFE DRIVING CONTEST Daniel Freed, tenth grade student at Osbourn Park High School, won first place overall at the Sixteenth Annual State Safe Driving Contest held May 13 in Newport News. Daniel, the son of Randy and Patricia Freed of Manassas, is the first Prince William County Public Schools student to take top honors at the state event. He was accompanied to the state competition by his driving instructor at Osbourn Park, Chuck Hornfeck. Daniel’s total score of 1,590 was fifteen points higher than the second place student from Newport News. He earned the top score on the knowledge portion of the test and scored 570 out of 600 possible points on the road test. As the overall winner, Daniel received a trophy and $1,000 savings bond. He also received a trophy and a $100 savings bond for earning the top score on the knowledge test. Daniel earned the opportunity to participate in the state contest
by finishing third in the Prince William County Safe Driving Contest held
at Gar-Field High School in April. Top finisher in that competition
was Zack Martin, a sophomore at Woodbridge High School. Zack was
unable to compete in Roanoke because of a lacrosse injury. Also competing

The three-part competition consists of a written test, which determines the students’ knowledge of the rules of the road, safe driving and professional driving characteristics; a range test, which includes driving in a straight line, making a turn, parallel parking, driving a serpentine path around cones, driving through an off-set “alley”; and a road test. In addition to penalties for mistakes in completing maneuvers, participants can be penalized for driving with one hand, failure to use a seat belt, and reckless driving.
