 GAR-FIELD HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT AWARDED DISCOVER 
CARD TRIBUTE SCHOLARSHIP

Tam Q. Nguyen, a junior at Gar-Field High School, won the state Gold II award in the Arts & Humanities Studies category of the Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship program for Virginia. 

According to Shirley Keller, program director, “The Discover Card Tribute Award, given in cooperation with the American Association of School Administrators, recognizes the outstanding achievements of exemplary high school juniors in the United States.”  

Scholarship recipients demonstrate leadership qualities and special talents, overcome obstacles, participate in community service activities and maintain a minimum 2.75 grade point average.  Keller said 10,000 applicants compete for nine scholarships in each of the 50 states and are designated as state Gold I, II and III.  Each state-level Tribute Award is for $2,500.  
Tam, son of Thao Thi Le moved to America with his mother in 1992 from Vietnam.  At Gar-Field, Tam is enrolled in the IB Program and is in the National Honor Society, a member of D.E.C.A., Step Team and the Prince William Youth Advisory Council.  Next year he would like to apply to an art academy and major in fashion or graphic design.
