SCHOOLS AND DEPARTMENTS EARN GRANTS

The following Prince William County schools and departments earned a total of more than $227,000 in grant funds during the summer of l999. The schools and departments, along with a brief description of the grant project, are below.

Saunders Middle School: Potomac Hospital has awarded Saunders Middle School a grant of $800 to underwrite costs of a visiting author and an editor to help students learn about writing and publishing. Cindy Dussia, sixth grade science teacher, submitted the grant proposal.

Rockledge Elementary School's After School Ecology Club: The Virginia Foundation for Agriculture in the classroom has awarded a grant of $200 to Rockledge to create an outdoor nature center on the school grounds to be used for environmental education. Michele Arsenault, a parent volunteer, submitted the grant proposal.

Ann Ludwig School: A $250 PWC Youth Suicide Prevention grant to Ann Ludwig School will be used to instruct staff and parents in suicide prevention. Marcia de Kramer, guidance counselor, submitted the grant proposal.

Osbourn Park High School: The school's vocational education department has received a $720 Automotive Service Excellence grant from the Virginia Department of Education to underwrite the costs of its Automotive Service Excellence program. Doug Burgess, automotive instructor, submitted the grant proposal.

Curriculum and Staff Development: The Vocational Education Department, under the direction of Supervisor of Vocational and Career Education Kathleen Kunze, has received a Northern Virginia Regional Partnership grant in the amount of $50,000 to establish Cisco Local Networking Academies at Forest Park and Stonewall Jackson high schools.

New Dominion Middle School: The Virginia Department of Education Regional Alternative Education Pilot Project has awarded a continuation grant of $145,462 to New Dominion. The project addresses the needs of students who have violated local school board policy related to weapons, drugs and substance abuse, or intentional injury to another person; who have been expelled or have long-term suspensions; or who have been released from a juvenile detention center. The project supervisor is Elmer Magyar, administrative assistant.

Minnieville Elementary School and Woodbridge Middle School: Litton Industries/PRC Inc., has awarded grants of $1,500 each to Minnieville Elementary and Woodbridge Middle schools. Minnieville will use the funds to conduct a supplemental reading instruction program for 60 third grade students. Randy Shelton, third grade teacher, and Kathy Pearson, parent volunteer, submitted the proposal. Woodbridge Middle will use the grant to conduct a peer partner program for students with mental handicaps. TMR teachers Christine Robison and Marcey Brothers submitted the grant proposal.

Godwin Middle School: NOVATEC has awarded a grant of $1,000 to Godwin Middle School to purchase software for the school's accelerated reader program. The grant was submitted by reading teacher Mary Harper.

Bel Air Elementary School: The National Home Library Foundation has awarded a grant of $1,500 to Bel Air. The school will use the grant funds to purchase children's books for a family literacy program. Marleta London, reading specialist submitted the grant proposal.

Bennett Elementary School PTA: The Wal-Mart Matching Grant program has matched the $1,000 raised by the school's Spring Fair. Yvette Sullivan, a parent volunteer, submitted the grant proposal.

Marshall Elementary School: The EIAP program at Marshall has received two grants to help cover costs associated with the family involvement component of the program. Prince William County Public Schools Education Foundation Special Project funds in the amount of $4,000 and a Family Preservation & Family Support Services grant of $3,700 were awarded to the program under the supervision of Principal Otelia Frazier.

Gar-Field High School: The Virginia Education Association has awarded $500 to the Gar-Field High School to assist in the implementation of a project entitled "Algebra and Geometry for the Real Word." LD teacher Leslie Reed and ED teacher Nancy Hagy submitted the proposal.

Student Services: The Virginia Department of Education Department of Compensatory Programs has awarded a grant of $15,000 to support the "Beyond Awareness II" conference sponsored by the Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William County school divisions. The grant proposal was submitted by Allison Stearns, coordinator of student assistance program specialists.

Gar-Field High School and Rippon Middle School: Mobil Corporation has awarded grants of $500 each to Gar-Field and Rippon to purchase art and music supplies, respectively. Gar-Field's grant proposal was submitted by Helene Simpson-Chapman, business teacher.
