TWO COUNTY MIDDLE SCHOOLS RECEIVE GOVERNOR’S AWARD

Rippon and Marsteller middle schools have been selected as two of Governor Gilmore’s Virginia Naturally 2000 schools. Only thirty-two schools have earned distinction in Virginia. One of the goals of Virginia Naturally 2000 is to recognize exemplary efforts undertaken by Virginia schools that increase the environmental awareness and stewardship of its students.

The school recognition program is in its first year.   John Woodley, Jr., Virginia Secretary of Natural Resources, believes that the quality and quantity of the applications was outstanding and the recipients represent Virginia’s leaders in incorporating environmental education with creative programs.

Both Marsteller and Rippon middle schools applied for this distinction and were selected for their efforts in environmental education.  Woodley will present a flag representing a natural resource to each school. Judy Brown and Sheryl Quinlan, seventh grade science teachers at Marsteller applied to the Naturally School Recognition Program.  Marsteller plans to have 7th graders and members of the Ecology Club present when the flag is formally received.  Ann Calendar, sponsor of the Ecology Club and seventh grade life science teacher, prepared the Naturally 2000 application for Rippon Middle School. When the flag is presented, Rippon plans a forthcoming assembly. For more information contact Rippon at 703-491-2171 or Marsteller at 703-368-8134.
