COUNTY SCHOOLS' STAFF DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
CITED FOR EXCELLENCE

The Department of Curriculum and Staff Development of Prince William County Public Schools has been selected as one of the recipients of the 2000 Excellence in Education Awards given by the Center for Teacher Education at Virginia Tech. The award was presented at the Annual Excellence in Education Conference held on the Virginia Tech campus on November 2 and November 3.

The award recognizes the “Mapping for Instruction” program that was developed by the department of curriculum and staff development in 1998-99.  “Mapping” is a long-range planning tool that provides pacing of the curriculum and ensures that all Prince William County objectives are taught.

Pamela Gauch, associate superintendent for instruction, and Tawnya Soltis, principal of Old Bridge Elementary School, represented the school division and presented the Mapping for Instruction program at the Virginia Tech conference.  As the Standards of Learning grant coordinator for Prince William County Public Schools at the time of implementation of the Mapping for Instruction program, Soltis developed the mapping initiative and the cadre training that launched the initiative.
