2005 STUDENTS SHARPEN MATH SKILLS IN TOURNEY More than 120 of the county’s most talented mathematics students recently competed in the fifth annual Mathematics Challenge 24 Tournament at Godwin Middle School. The students from grades 3 through 9 earned a shot at countywide honors after winning grade level competitions at their individual schools. The Prince William County Public Schools Mathematics Challenge 24 program uses the innovative Math 24 Game to “make mathematics more appealing, accessible, and, most of all, fun,” said Carol Knight, mathematics supervisor for the county schools. “The card game reinforces mental math, problem solving, pattern sensing, concentration and critical thinking,” said Knight. “Students not only practice mathematics computation in the areas of whole numbers, fractions, decimals, exponents, and algebra, they become adept at mental math, communicating mathematically, validating their thinking, and recognizing multiple ways to solve problems,” she said.
