NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP WINNER ANNOUNCED

Tristan R. Geyster, a Prince William County Public School student who attends Stonewall Jackson High School, has been named a National Merit Scholarship winner by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Geyster’s scholarship is sponsored by Science Applications International Corporation, which provides scholarships for children of SAIC employees.

Geyster, the son of Rachel and Christopher Geyster of Bristow, plans to attend the University of Virginia where he will study theoretical physics. He has been the president of the Math and Science Club at Stonewall Jackson High School for the past two years, and is a member of It’s Academic, Model United Nations, Future Business Leaders of America, French Club, and the National Honor Society. Geyster has received numerous awards in math and science, including “Best in School” in the Math League. He was awarded a place on Virginia’s International Space Olympics team. He plays and referees soccer.

Scholars named in this, the first group of winners in the 50th annual National Merit Scholarship Program, will receive corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards financed by some 300 companies, foundations, and other business organizations generally provided to students who advanced to the finalist level and are children of their employees or members, residents of communities the company serves, or who have career interests the sponsor wishes to encourage.

Approximately half of the 15,000 finalists will be selected as Merit Scholarship winners by the conclusion of the 2005 competition. The 8,200 Merit Scholar designees will receive a total of about $33.9 million in scholarships for college undergraduate study.
