N.R. #334, 6/22/05 Date: June
22, 2005 PRINCE WILLIAM NETWORK AWARDED FOR HAPPENIN’ HABITATS WEB SITE The Prince William Network “Happenin' Habitats” Web site won the Distinguished Achievement Award for Best Science Web site from the Association of Educational Publishers. Prince William Network is the distance learning component of Media Production Services, Department of Information Services, Prince William County Public Schools. The Happenin' Habitats Web site, located at http://happeninhabitats.pwnet.org, was created to accompany the Happenin' Habitats live electronic field trip in April 2005 with the National Wildlife Federation. Habitat is defined on the Web site as a place where species get what they need to survive: food, water, cover, and a place to raise young. Teachers are encouraged to use the site to find a wealth of information about how to create an accessible wildlife habitat site, or outdoor classroom, in a schoolyard setting. The habitats can be used to study all subjects — science, math, language arts, social studies, and more. Wildlife habitat sites provide the opportunity to teach all students something that can be challenging in the classroom. The course includes activity adaptations for students with hearing, learning, motor, and visual disabilities. The Web site also contains site accessibility guidelines to create a habitat that can be enjoyed by all. Happenin' Habitats is also correlated to national science education standards. The emphasis for the entire project is accessibility for all students, and the Web site was designed to comply with all of the Priority 1 Guidelines of the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and to conform to all standards in Section 508 (29 U.S.C. 794d) of the Rehabilitation Act. The supervisor of Media Production Services is Ben Swecker. Kristy Liercke, coordinator of program development, and Richard Shahan, administrative coordinator of video production, also worked on the Happenin’ Habitats Web site.
