Bel Air Elementary School
April/May/June 2008
I would like to welcome Mrs. Crenshaw, a school counselor who will be working with Miss Marshall for the rest of the school year.   Mrs. Crenshaw will be at Bel Air on Thursdays -- we are very excited to have her here!

Here come the SOL’s! The students and teachers have been working hard to get ready for the SOL’s and their efforts are paying off. In this newsletter I have included ways you can help your student to be ready to smash the SOL’s!

If you need to contact me, please call the school at 703-670-4050 or e-mail
marsharl@pwcs.edu.

Classroom Guidance Lessons
During the fourth quarter, I will be working with students in Kindergarten and 2nd grade. Mrs. Crenshaw will be doing lessons with our 1st graders.   We will also do test taking reviews with students in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades.

Smashing the SOL’s
The following are some great ways to help your child get ready for the SOL tests:

1. Display a positive attitude about the SOL tests.
2. Make sure your child knows that his/her achievements are important to you.
3. Talk to your child about what he/she is learning.
4. Encourage your child to stay relaxed and calm during the SOL tests.
5. Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and eats a good breakfast before the test.
6. Make sure your child is at school and on time on testing days.
7. Encourage your child to try hard and do his or her best every day at school.

Character Counts Spirit Days
We have 3 more spirit days scheduled for this year. They are:
Friday, April 25th   Respect   Wear YELLOW!
Friday, May 16
th   Responsibility   Wear GREEN!
Friday, June 6th    Caring    Wear RED!

Panther Leadership Council
The Panther Leadership Council is made up of students from the 4th and 5th grades who are working hard to help make Bel Air a better school. Their latest project, a brochure on bullying, will be sent home with each student. Please take the time to look through the brochure with your child.

Healthy Communities/Healthy Youth
Here are two important assets as we approach the SOL’s and the summer:

Asset #16 High Expectations
Both parents and teachers encourage the young person to do well.

Asset #18 Youth Programs
Young person spends three or more hours per week in sports, clubs, or organizations at school and/or in the community.
