WELCOME TO MRS. MATICE'S

Welcome to the fifth grade class in room 212.

This year we will be studying oceanography, geology, light energy, sound energy, the nature of matter and organization and diversity of life in science.   We'll also be reviewing the units that were taught in the fourth grade in preparation for our 5th grade Science SOL.

In social studies we’ll be studying U.S. geography, early explorer, Native Americans, Colonization, the American Revolution, establishing a new nation, Reconstruction, and Westward Expansion (Lewis and Clark).

Skills emphasized in math will be: statistics, geometry, whole number computation, fractions, decimals, probability, measurements, perimeter/area, patterns, algebraic functions.

In Language Arts, we will be practicing using cueing systems while reading fiction and non-fiction stories and trade books. Some of our readings will be presented as “Readers’ Theater”.   We’ll also be doing “Literature Circles” with some of the selections. We’ll be writing fiction stories as well as reports related to our science and social studies curriculum. Our research paper will also be related to what we’re studying in social studies and science.

Again this year, students will be grouped in teams.   They will receive snack rewards when their team has earned 100 points.   Points can be earned by staying on task, having good classroom and cafeteria conduct and keeping their team area clean.
