Cedar Point Elementary School PTA and the Virginia Science Museum is proud to present the third  annual Space Week at Cedar Point Elementary, May 1st – May 5th, 2006.  The events are as follows:

 

 

Grades K – 5 will climb aboard Space Traveler, a 53-foot trailer, to experience 20 hands-on exhibits. Discover “Traveling in Space,” “Living in Space” and “Space Exploration.” Launch a rocket sled, experiment with a gyroscope, check your weight on Mars and much more.  Each class will have 30 minutes for exploration.

 

 

 

 

 

Also during the first part of the week the school gymnasium (non-cafeteria side) will be transformed into a starry night sky.  A portable planetarium will be set up and a “night sky” program will be presented by the Science Museum of Virginia for grades 1-3.

On Thursday, May 4th, the students will be able to visit a Black Hawk static display that will be brought to Cedar Point for a special 4-hour appearance.

 

 

 

 

 

 

During the morning of May 5th (time to be announced), former International Space Station astronaut Carl Walz from NASA Headquarters will speak with students in grades 3 - 5.  Walz is a veteran of four space flights, and has logged 231 days in space. Carl Walz currently hold the U.S. space flight endurance record of 196 days in space.  Currently, Walz is the Manager for the Life Support and Habitation program of the Exploration Systems Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington D.C. He is responsible for the development of advanced spacecraft life support, monitoring and control systems and extravehicular activity suits to support the Vision for Space Exploration.

 

 

Special Hands-On Workshops are being conducted for kindergarten and grades 4 and 5.
