COLES LIBRARY December Library News The library has been a busy place during November. Students have been working on reference skills this month, including things like dictionaries and other reference books. The students have started over with reading AR books for the beginning of a new quarter. Students need to get a good start on the 3 AR books due at the end of January. It would be great to have them read with time to spare. The library has been very fortunate to have many new math books. Miss Ramona Hauptman wrote a grant for multicultural math books and they have arrived. These books will supplement the Math Investigations series. Many of them are AR books, so that will certainly be a great addition to the AR collection, as well. Thanks so much to our dedicated volunteers, Mrs. Page, Mrs. Beus, Mrs. Hafley, and Mrs. Faraj . If you have any time to share with the library, it will be greatly appreciated. There is a large volume of books being returned everyday. It is great to get them back on the shelves for students as quickly as possible.

Mission Statement library Media Center provides support for the educational goals of Coles Elementary and for goals of Prince William County School System. The Coles Library serves as a center for the school’s instructional process for students, teachers, and the community.
Library instruction supports the Standards of Learning objectives with collaborative lessons planning with the classroom teachers to meet the needs of all students. Library instruction provides problem solving and information literacy. The library provides a safe, positive environment where the diverse clientele of students, teachers, and community members will become life long learners, as well as, good citizens of our society.
Checkout Procedures Kindergarten may check out one book. First grade may check out two books. Second through fifth grade may check out two items, plus an AR book. Students may keep the books for ten school days. If they have not finished their book they may renew the book. The book must be in the library to be renewed. If a student has a book that is overdue, the student will not be able to checkout another book until the book is returned or paid for. Students are responsible for books that are checked out in their name. If a book gets lost or damaged, students are responsible for paying for paying to replace the book.
The Information Management Process The amount of information that becomes available to us on a daily basis can be overwhelming. Students need the critical thinking and problem solving skills to be effective users of information so that it is meaningful and relevant. To insure that students have a foundation in using basic resources and the necessary skills to locate, utilize and apply information, Prince William County has formulated the Information Management Process (IMP). This provides an organizational framework for research. The Information Management Process consists of the following five steps: 1. Develop the question – What do I need to know? 2. Locate resources – Where should I look to find out? 3. Evaluate resources – does this have the information I need? 4. Record and analyze – What does it mean? What information can I write? 5. Synthesize – What have I learned? How can I share it? By planning and teaching cooperatively, librarians and classroom teachers incorporate the essential skills into the daily classroom curriculum to ensure that students are information literate. |
