A Message from the Principal

Welcome To Coles Elementary School.  Our goal is to provide a World Class Education to your children.  We believe in promoting positive self-esteem, character building, a love for learning and a belief that all children can and will learn.  It is our job to prepare them for success and happiness through their elementary school years.

As your principal, I am proud and honored to work with the  students, teachers, parents and the Coles Community.  I welcome your children and you to a school filled with outstanding teachers and staff who genuinely care about your children.

Coles is a Bully-free school.  Your children will be safe and most of all, feel safe. We are a School of Excellence. Therefore, our academic expectations are high. Students are expected to learn the Standards of Learning. We expect our students to be respectful to ALL adults and to be willing learners.  When we expect more, we get more from our students. Our curriculum is Rigorous, Relevant and Relational.

I look forward to another exciting, productive and fun-filled academic year.  I have an open-door policy and welcome your visits.

All who have meditated on the art of governing mankind have been convinced that the fate of empires depends on the education of youth.”

News from Mrs. Turner for May

Hello Roadrunner Family and Happy May,

It’s the start of May and we have about 30 days left in this school year.  This year has gone by amazingly fast.  Can you believe it? This has been a wonderful year.  As you know, we have the best kids of course, if you don’t mind me bragging a bit.  Our teachers are fantabulous and our parents are amazing. I’m so proud to be the principal of this great school.

As you know, I recently announced that we won our appeal. Therefore, we DID make AYP for this year. I know it took a while for the state to make a decision, but they did and we’re so proud.

Making AYP is a big deal in the state of Virginia and in PWC.  Therefore, we must continue to do well in all areas on the Virginia SOLs which are coming up in two weeks. Please remember to review with your children daily with the study guides the teachers are sending home.

On another note, as I plan for staffing of personnel for next school year, I must remind you to send in your Moving Van form if you haven’t already. We need to know if your child will be returning or leaving Coles for the 2008-2009 school year.  If you don’t have your form anymore, please call the office and we’ll be happy to send you another one.

As we move toward making plans for next year, I ask that you refrain from writing letters requesting certain teachers unless it is truly a special case.  We have a fabulous staff at Coles and I know any teacher at each grade level can meet students’ learning needs and styles. There will be personnel changes which are not finalized before the end of the school year. Therefore, we need to be able to build classroom rosters heterogeneously with regard to instructional programming, not personal preference. I welcome any specific concerns you’d like to share about your child. However, please do not specify a specific teacher.  I thank you in advance for trusting in us to make good decisions for your child/children.

Regards,

Mrs. Alfie Turner, Principal
