ADAPTED PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEFINED

Adapted Physical Education (APE) is a related service for students in special education who are unable to participate in or benefit from the general physical education program. APE is a diversified program of developmental activities, games, sports, and rhythms, suited to the interests, capacities and limitations of students with disabilities who are unable to safely or successfully participate in the activities of the general physical education program.

OVERVIEW OF SERVICES

APE teachers are certified to teach health and physical education. Currently there is no special endorsement required for APE in Virginia. Services may be provided in one or more of the following ways: 1) consulting with the regular PE teacher so that the child may be included in regular PE, 2) attending the regular PE class with the student to make adaptations/modifications in activities, or 3) providing a separate class that is modified for the specific students’ abilities.
