Moderate Mental Retardation means significantly sub average general intellectual functioning (3-4 standard deviations below the mean) existing concurrently with deficits in adaptive behavior and manifested during the developmental period that adversely affects a child’s educational performance.

OVERVIEW OF SERVICES

Prince William County Public Schools provides a full continuum of services for students in grades K - 12 with Moderate Cognitive Impairment.  The emphasis of the program is on the development of functional life skills, which may include instruction in Functional Academics, Life Skills, Communication, Daily Living Skills, Vocational Skills, Job Skills, and Recreation and Leisure Skills. The overall goal of the Moderate Cognitive Impaired program is to enable our students to reach appropriate levels of independence to equip them for adult living so that they may become active, participating members in the community.

The program uses a variety of strategies within a structured small classroom setting to prepare students to transition to general education settings and provides opportunities for the application of skills across the school, home, and community settings.  Prince William County utilizes the Aligned Standards of Learning Curriculum to drive the instructional program.

The preparation for adult community living is an integral part of the Moderate Cognitive Impaired Program. Students participate in work programs outside the school setting to provide real life work experiences to develop job skills.

Community Based Instruction (CBI) is an integral part of this curriculum.  The teachers work cooperatively with other special education programs to provide role models for the students and actual community experiences for both groups through creative scheduling.  These CBI opportunities provide practical application of the curriculum.  Employment opportunities for older students are based upon these actual experiences, the student’s desires and aptitude.
