MISSION STATEMENT

The purpose of the Prince William County Schools' Health and Physical Education Program is for students to acquire a knowledge base for wellness that encompasses social, physical, and mental health. Students will further apply this knowledge gained through participation, study, and involvement in a wide variety of experiences resulting in a healthy lifestyle. Students will be motivated to analyze and adapt their wellness choices to their changing environment and their individual needs throughout their lifetimes through fitness, sports and recreation, knowledge of body systems, safety and first aid, and personal health and hygiene.  At Enterprise Elementary School, it is our mission to improve upper body, lower body, abdominal strength, cardiovascular endurance and flexibility. This is accomplished through the use of the FITNESSGRAM and Project Fit America Equipment.

FITNESSGRAM

Depending on age we use some components of the fitness gram in every grade level. The test that was chosen as part of Prince William’s County's Accountability Plan for Physical Education is the FITNESSGRAM. This choice was based on a committee's recommendation after receiving input from experts around the country in fitness testing.

The Five Components of the FITNESSGRAM:

1. Aerobic Capacity
2. Muscular Strength
3. Muscular endurance
4. Flexibility
5. Body Composition

The philosophy of the FITNESSGRAM:

1. Fitness is for a lifetime.
2. Fitness is for everyone.
3. Fitness is fun and enjoyable.

The goal and driving purpose of Project Fit America is to create new opportunities for kids to be active, fit and healthy as part of the everyday school experience. Each of the PFA Core and Broad Based curriculum contain lesson plans in which fitness activities are planned to provide fun experiences for each child in a manner that builds confidence and competence.  The PFA outdoor equipment is specifically designed to address upper body, lower body, abdominal strength, cardiovascular endurance and flexibility. This is a freestanding structure of seven work out areas permanently installed outdoors on the school grounds.  The PFA indoor equipment is comprised of the following:

1. Fitness Cups-

These are fitness cups for explosive cardio, teamwork, challenge and cooperation with kids.

2. Sport Hoops-

The multi-colored hoops are 3 pounds in weight and great for sustaining upper body strength, cardio and abdominal training and development.

3. Pacer Cadence Tape -

This activity is lead in an area as small as 48-60 feet and provides outstanding cardio training.  Kids shuttle run in a timed sequence to a "beeped" cadence.   As kids increase their cardio, the beeps get faster to maintain.

PARENTS  CAN ENCOURAGE
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AT HOME

  • Participate with your children. Parental attention is one of the biggest motivators to children of all ages. Try to focus on what they like, not what interests you.

  •
  • Emphasize participation rather than performance and give liberal amounts of positive reinforcement and recognition for daily activities.

  •
  • Remember to individualize. Each child has personal likes and dislikes. Don't attempt to force everyone into the same activity.

  •
  • Fitness and activity are for everyone. Each child can find some form of physical activity to enjoy. It does not take a lot of activity to be healthy. Encourage them to do some physical activity almost every day.

    * EXAMPLE ACTIVITIES

    Stairs step up-

All that is needed is two steps! Facing the steps, student places one foot flat on the step, step up by straightening his/her leg, and then places the other foot on the step.  The first foot up is the first foot to step down.  Repeat for approximately two minutes. This builds lower body, abdominal strength, and cardiovascular endurance, not to mention can help you to run
      faster!

    Muscular Strength (Push-ups)

    - Push-ups aren't just for buff army trainees; they are great upper body, low-cost exercise. If you're just looking to tone up or gain strength but not too much mass, push-ups are a great exercise. The best thing is you don't have to go to the gym to do them; you can do them at home! Here's the proper way to do push-ups anywhere. Push the body up off the mat with the arms until the arms are straight. The back and legs should be kept in a straight line. The body should then be lowered using the arms until the elbows bend at a 90 degree angle and the upper arms are parallel to the floor. This movement is repeated as many times as possible.  This movement builds the upper body, abdominal strength, and cardiovascular endurance.

    APPROPRIATE DRESS

    PHYSICAL EDUCATION ACTIVITIES

Students should wear tennis shoes and appropriate clothing to participate in all physical activities. Dress shoes, sandals, boots, heelys and fashion tennis shoes with the higher heels are unsafe shoes.
