Squirreling Our Way Through

Grade Level: 1-2 grade
Introduction:
What a fun activity to begin the year with your 2nd graders. They
will enjoy listening to the tale of Pearl Squirrel as she prepares for winter.
Pearl is so proud of her new home, for it is her very first home! She is anxious
to show it off to her woodland friends only to be told by them that their home
is much better than hers.
Get ready for an
engaging discussion followed by and hands on kidspiration activity

Brief
Description of Activity:
Students will gather around their computer as the teacher computer accesses
Tumblebooks.The teacher will use NetOp to demo each computer.
While the main
computer is on the story:
A Home for Pearl Squirrel
(6 ˝ minutes), students will follow along with the story on their computer.
Following the
story, students will examine and talk about the main idea, characters and
character issues in the story. In addition, students will learn that all animals
have specific needs for their individual adaptations. Total discussion time: 10
– 12 minutes.
Task:
Kids will access
Kidspiration and go to Picture. Find
‘symbol maker’
up in the upper right hand corner and click to go. Students can create
with paint and insert a stamp. When they are done, click on ‘done’ and the
picture will appear on the main screen. (see example) Students can go back to
the symbol maker and create as many habitats as they’d like too.
