Testing Requirements: Throughout the school year, children participate in multiple assessments to determine academic progress. The following is a list of assessments given throughout the year:

DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment)   is used to identify a student's reading level. It is given to all students  in the fall and spring
bullet
PALS (Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening) is the state-provided screening tool for assessing reading readiness and skill level.

GATES (Gates McGinitie Reading) test gives a general  level of reading achievement of individual students  compared to the nation. It is given to students in grade 2-5 in the fall and spring (or as necessary).

CFA (Common Formative Assessment) tests  are given  to second through fifth graders at the end of each unit of study in Reading, Math, Science and Social Studies. They are given throughout the year and are closely aligned with  the SOLs.

School wide growth measures are given to students as a base line for math and writing at the beginning of the year and then again at the end of the year to show growth.

Stanford 9   (Stanford Achievement Test ) identifies  students as below grade level, approaching grade level, and on grade level in reading and math. It is used to compare student performance in PWC with students in Virginia and the nation. It is given to fourth graders in the fall.

SOL (Standards of Learning) tests measure the student's knowledge of Virginia's Standards of Learning in English, Math, Science and Social Studies in grade 3, 4, and 5 in the spring. It is also used to accredit schools.

CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) is given to third graders in the Fall and is used to identify gifted students. It gives a general measure of ability.

STAR reading/AR (Accelerated Reader) has three different types of assessment that give data on students’ reading practice, literacy skills development, and performance on classroom assignments through computerized tests of books students have read. All students are included.
