March is Music is Our Schools Month!

Music Program
By Tanya Vance
In
April and May students are learning much about composers and
orchestral instruments. Kindergarteners have been working with
rhythm, movement, singing, and playing instruments including the
Orff instruments, bells and xylophones. First graders are learning
about orchestral instruments and using instruments to accompany a
story. They will be learning about how beats are grouped in sets of
twos and threes. Second graders created their own rhythm song and
accompanied it with percussion instruments. They performed songs in
ABA form singing and using instruments. They have also worked with
solfege syllables, sol and mi. Third and fourth graders are
finished with their recorders. Third grade is learning about
important composers like Hadyn and Mozart. They are also studying
string instruments, particularly the violin, and listening to music
by the famous child prodigy, Midori. Fourth grade is also focused
on learning about the string family of instruments since many of
them may be considering playing a string instrument next year. They
are also learning about music from the Civil War period. Fifth
graders are learning about famous composers such as Beethoven, Bach,
and Copland. They have listened to and analyzed compositions by
these composers. They particularly enjoyed comparing Beethoven’s
original fifth symphony with the disco version, written in the 70s
by Walter Murphy.
Happy music making to all! |
