- Thomas Jefferson
Library Staff
Our library assistant: Mrs. Karen Fallah began working in our library in September 2000. Her children used to attend Marumsco Hills Elementary. She has worked for the county for 8 years including the Park Authority. She wanted to work in the library because she loves children and thinks Marumsco Hills is a wonderful school. program is to ensure that students
Open Scheduling "In the midst of the present-day
information explosion, a student having just one 'turn' to use the library
media sources on Tuesday at 10:00 A.M. is not enough. Students must have
access to information at all times." - Jan Buchanan, Flexible Access
Library Media Programs, 1991.
Flexible access programs are
student centered. In effective library programs, information and research
skills are not taught in isolation, but are incorporated into the
curriculum. Collaborative planning is a process in which the librarian
works with classroom teachers to incorporate the use of library resources
into student learning activities.
Information Management Process
The world today is full of
information. Instead of trying to teach children all the information (an
impossible task!) we must teach them how to find and use the information
they need. To become successful adults and life-long learners, students
must learn how to manage information. There are five steps in the Information Management Process:
Checkout Policies "What the research tells me is that
if children…start reading for pleasure…good things will happen."
Children who are allowed to choose the books they want to read, will read more. When children are choosing books at Marumsco Hills Library, they are encouraged to choose books they are interested in, whether easy, challenging or "just right." This is truly reading for pleasure. Students are also encouraged to choose books on their reading level, that is, books that their teachers and parents might assign or expect them to read. For these reasons, students may check out four books for one week at a time. Students may return books sooner. Students can also renew books, if needed longer. All patrons are expected to be responsible for our books, so that others may enjoy and use them. Overdue notices are sent out regularly to teachers and parents. Replacement costs will be charged for lost or damaged books.
