MESSAGE FROM THE ADMINISTRATION

The 2007-2008 school year is proving to be extremely rewarding for our school and our community as we focus on the initiatives set forth by Prince William County Schools: Literacy, Math Investigations, Inclusion, and Wellness.

The staff at McAuliffe is implementing a balanced literacy program that emphasizes guided reading on students’ individual reading levels. Teachers also incorporate a writer’s workshop, which allows students the opportunity to grow with the domains of writing: Usage and Mechanics, Written Expression and Composition. This focus on literacy supports comprehension of our social studies, science and math curriculum.

Math Investigations is being successfully implemented at McAuliffe. Kindergarten through third grade students are fully engaged in the Math Investigations program which allows students to move from learning math at a basic knowledge level to applying math concepts and communicating math mastery on a conceptual level. The implementation of the Math Investigations program will enable our students to apply their mathematical understanding.

At McAuliffe we believe that every student is entitled to the most appropriate instruction possible to meet their needs. With the implementation of the Inclusion initiative, resources and staff are utilized to ensure this belief is set into action. Collaboration among all instructional staff ensures that all students at McAuliffe receive every possible resource to ensure a world class education.

Wellness among all of our students, staff and families will continue to be an important initiative in Prince William County. We strive to provide the best for our students academically, physically, and socially as well. Many efforts are being made to provide healthy choices for our breakfast and lunch program and our families have done a remarkable job in providing healthier snacks for students. Physical exercise is also a priority. Our block schedule allows for each student to receive two P.E. classes every six days. As always, in order for our wellness initiative to be successful, our staff, students and families must continue to make a healthy lifestyle a priority in the classroom and at home.

On behalf of the McAuliffe staff, we thank you for the collaboration, dedication and commitment to the total success of our implementation of the Prince William County initiatives and the belief in the ability of all of our students to succeed.

Sincerely,

Cindy West and Nathaniel Provencio
