Virginia among states reporting widespread influenza activity.

The CDC reports that influenza activity decreased slightly during December 20-26 in the United States. However, there are four states reporting widespread influenza activity: Delaware, Maine, New Jersey, and Virginia.

Visits to doctors for influenza-like illness (ILI) nationally increased slightly this past week over the previous week. According to CDC, this is the first increase in this indicator after eight consecutive weeks of national decreases. The increase in the percentage of visits to doctors for ILI during this period is likely influenced by fewer people going to the doctor for routine health care visits during the holiday season, as has occurred during previous seasons.

Parents are advised to continue to remind their children of proper handwashing technique, and to cover their coughs or sneezes.

Wall-mounted hand sanitizing dispensers to be installed in schools.

In an effort to remain proactive in the control the H1N1 virus and to ensure the safest educational environment for the students and staff of Prince William County Public Schools, the Office of Facilities Services will begin installing wall-mounted hand sanitizing dispensers in our schools on December 3. This installation will take several weeks to complete in all schools.

The dispensers will be in addition to the portable 12 oz. containers of hand sanitizer that are already in use at our schools. These new wall-mounted dispensers will be placed in strategic locations of the school where it may not be convenient for hand washing, such as the media center (library), cafeteria, and computer lab.

As a reminder, the best way to fight the spread of the H1N1 virus is through good personnel hygiene such as proper hand washing. Hand sanitizers are being placed in the schools to support hand washing practices, not to replace them.

Memorandum of Agreement continues strong working relationship with the Prince William Health District

The Prince William County Public School Division (PWCS) continues to work in concert with the Prince William Health District (PWHD) in monitoring the H1N1 virus in the community. The School Division is in communication on a daily basis reviewing attendance data and discussing other health-related matters. In addition, PWCS assists in publicizing important health-related announcements and news items from the PWHD, such as vaccination information.

The PWHD decided to hold their public vaccination clinic at Manassas Mall to distribute the limited number of vaccine doses they have received. As has been the case since the beginning of this pandemic, the School Division is standing by to assist the PWHD in any way possible.

At the November 4 School Board meeting, a formal Memorandum of Agreement was adopted. At this point, there is no set time for the PWHD to administer H1N1 vaccinations in Prince William County Schools. Any decision to do so would be made by the PWHD, and the agreement formalizes how those arrangements could be quickly facilitated.

Presently, students may obtain their H1N1 vaccine through the Manassas Mall clinics which are held Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, depending on vaccine availability. Every Wednesday, the clinic at Manassas Mall is dedicated to vaccinating children in our community. In addition, the PWHD has been notified that over 62 medical practices in our community have received limited amounts of H1N1 vaccine.

Please know that the health and safety of all of our students and staff is of paramount importance to PWCS and PWHD.

Situation Update on H1N1 (swine flu) Virus

The Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) is closely observing H1N1 (swine flu) cases in the southern hemisphere. The number of cases is on the increase this summer, which is not the usual time period for cases of flu. This fact is one of the reasons that the CDC and the World Health Organization are warning the public that everyone needs to be constantly aware of prevention measures.

The CDC reports that cases of H1N1 Flu infection continue to climb: As of 7 p.m. on July 2, 2009, CDC is reporting 33,902 confirmed and probable cases and 170 deaths in 53 states and territories (including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands).

Specifically, CDC reports that it "continues to take aggressive action to respond to the outbreak of H1N1 (swine flu) influenza. CDC’s response goals are to reduce the spread and severity of illness, and to provide information to help health care providers, public health officials, and the public address the challenges posed by this new public health threat."
