Nightly Reading Homework
Dear Parents,
This is our first
night of reading homework. I will be
sending home a book each night (Monday-Thursday) with your child. Please take the time to find a quiet spot (no
television) to listen to your child read.
Before reading, look at each picture with your child and talk about what
is happening in the story. Then, have
your child read the story to you. It is
fine to help your child with difficult words.
We are using five reading strategies in first grade to help your child
decode unknown words. I am asking that
you use the same five strategies at home.
They are:
1. Look at the picture.
2. Get your mouth ready for the first sound.
3. Look for parts
of the word that you know.
4. Go back to the beginning and read it again.
5. Think about what makes sense.
After reading,
please fill in the monthly reading log.
I do require that you sign next to the title. If your child completes his/her reading
homework each night, he/she will receive a Pizza Hut Book-It coupon for a free
personal pan pizza. I will give out
coupons on the last day of the month.
You may write down any additional books that your child reads at home on
the reading log, as well.
Sincerely,
Ms. Schenning
