In January, we continue our exploration of winter by reading, retelling and performing our own version of Jan Brett’s classic The Mitten. A follow up writing activity captures the children’s imaginations on paper. While we eagerly anticipate some snowfall of our own, we wonder just how long will winter last. We look to the groundhog for the answer as we explore shadows and sources of heat and light. We are counting down the days until our 100th Day of School Celebration! |

February is the perfect time to reflect on Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and the birthday of our country. We notice Washington’s face on the quarter and the dollar bill and Honest Abe’s on the penny and the five dollar bill. As we discuss patriotic symbols, we learn that Betsy Ross is credited for making our country’s first flag at the request of The Father of Our Country, George Washington. We pay tribute, during Black History Month, to African American authors and illustrators who delight us with both words and pictures. We celebrate the birthday of another beloved author, Dr. Seuss. We use his books to help us identify and make rhymes. |

In March, we will notice the changes in spring using our five senses. We will see the budding trees and new leaves with our eyes, hear the chirping of birds with our ears, feel the warmth of the sun on our faces, smell the spring flowers with our noses and become aware of the ways our tongue tastes (salty, sweet, bitter and sour). We will end the nine weeks with a unit on Magnets. Students will engage in predicting what objects magnets attract and perform hands on experiments to test their predictions. Please continue to support your child in completing his/her homework and most importantly reading 15 minutes everyday. |
