School Counseling Program:
Mission Statement: Through
individual and small group counseling and
classroom guidance lessons, the Penn Elementary
School Counseling Department will support
student growth in the areas of personal/social,
academic and career development. The Penn
Elementary School Counseling Department will
work together with Penn administration, staff,
and families to facilitate student learning and
demonstrate the belief that “All Children Can
Learn.”
Philosophical Statement:
The counselors at Penn Elementary
School believe that all students have dignity and
worth. All students have the right to participate in
and are considered in planning and implementing the
school counseling program. All students shall have
access to a state certified, master’s degree level
school counselor to deliver the counseling program.
The Penn Elementary comprehensive
school counseling program will use Prince William
County K-12 School Counseling Curriculum. All the
counselors at Penn Elementary School will abide by
the professional school counseling ethics as
advocated by the American School Counselor
Association and participate in professional
development activities essential to maintain a
quality school counseling program.
What is the role of the school counselor?
We serve the Penn community in a variety of ways…
-
- Classroom Guidance: We teach the Prince
William County Schools
-
Guidance and Counseling Curriculum to students
in the classroom.
- Small Groups: We conduct small groups on
a variety of topics including study
-
skills, friendships skills, anger management,
changing families, and self-
-
concept.
- Individual Counseling: We meet with
students individually on various topics
-
depending on the referral. Referrals can be made
by parents, staff members,
-
and the students may refer him/herself.
Get Ready for a Great School Year!
Here are five things that you can do to help
your child have a successful school year:
- Meet your child’s teacher
- Establish routines
- Have high expectations
-
- Read to and with your child
- Support the school
By doing these things you are showing your child
that school is a priority.

Attendance is Directly Linked to Achievement
An important way that you can help your child be
successful in school is by getting your child to
school on time every day. Enforcing a regular
bedtime and making sure your child is organized
can help with this.

Keeping the lines of communication open is
top priority for us!
