Transportation Policy

Transportation Procedures

These procedures are put in place for the safety of ALL students attending Porter.  All families MUST have an updated signed transportation contract form completed and turned into the office.  This was part of the application process.  Since Porter is a school of choice, every child is being transported by vehicle or bus.   With this in mind, we are requesting all families to follow these rules and procedures.

For children riding a school bus...

We highly recommend that all children ride a school bus to school. There are express bus stops at each Prince William School.   If you would like to change your preference and have your child ride one of these buses, please complete a new  transportation contract form which may be obtained in the office and returned prior to the student riding the bus.

All students in grades 1st through 5th must have a responsible person, whose name is on the transportation form which has been given to the office, present at the bus stop for pick up and drop off daily. Middle School students (grades 6-8) are permitted to get off of the bus without a responsible person present ONLY if they have the “Parent/Guardian and Principal Permission” form signed and on file in the front office.

Each child will need to wear a bus number necklace the first week they ride that bus.  They will receive these necklaces at school during the first week.  Students meeting their bus should be at the stop five minutes before the regular pick-up time with their responsible person.

Students must obey Prince William County School's Code of Behavior.  It is a privilege for students to ride the bus to school.  Students and parents who do not obey the Code of Behavior and Porter's transportation agreement may be suspended from riding the bus.

For children being dropped off and picked up by car...

Children should not be dropped off before 8:55am. This means children are not to be let out of the vehicle until 8:55am. A staff member will notify the drivers when they can let the child out of the vehicle. We do not have staff members on duty prior to 8:55am.

To prevent traffic back ups, maintain safety, and keep the buses on time, we are requesting that vehicles follow this procedure.  Children are only to be let out of the cars when the car is in the front circle student drop off area.  Cars are to pull into the front circle and stop at the end of the front sidewalk.  Once the single lane circle in front of the school is full, all other cars will be directed up Forest Grove to turn around in the circle and then line up on the same side of street as the school. Once the circle is clear we will direct the next vehicles into the circle.

Families who are dropping off and picking up children daily...

Parents/guardians will need to have a number on their dash of the vehicle and the child must have the matching number on their transportation necklace. We will provide these to students the first day whose parents have indicated that they will be picking them up daily.  After the first week of school these necklaces can be obtained in the front office.  If for some reason you do not have your number for your vehicle, you must park your car in the parking lot and come into the front office after dismissal.  The office will then refer to the child’s transportation contract form and verify that the person present has been cleared to pick up your child.  A child will not be released to anyone without a number.

For children going to SAC...

Students, who are coming to Porter for before and after school care, need to be registered in the Prince William County School Age (SAC) Program.  When dropping off or picking up your child in the morning, you will need to park in the parking lot and walk your child into the gym where SAC is located.  SAC hours are 6:30 AM until 6:30 PM.  If you are interested in this before and/or after school program, please call 703-792-6091.

Early Dismissal…

If you need to pick your child up prior to dismissal, you may do so before 3:30. We cannot release a child between 3:30 and 3:40. We will dismissing all children at 3:40 and need all cars out of the bus circle.  Please see the Attendance Policy for additional information on Early Dismissal.
