My name is Mrs. Cowne and I teach Math to Kindergarten through fifth
grade. I am in the rotation opposite of
Computer Lab. I will see your child
every fourteen days in the rotation but I have an off rotation schedule as
well that allows me into most of the classes for a minimum of 15 minutes. I
also work with fourth and fifth grade students during Core Extension time. Both
of my schedules are towards the end of this web page.
I work with each
grade level team planning lessons for Math.
My lessons are hands-on based on group work, problem solving, and a
lot of discussion. My Math lessons ask your child to take what they know and
apply it to a particular problem or to explain what they know using different
types of manipulatives and writing.
The Math topics
for all grades include: Patterns,
Functions, and Algebra, Probability and Statistics, Geometry,
Number and Number Sense, Computation and Estimation, Measurement,
and Fractions. These areas become
more challenging as the student progress through the grade levels building on
the past year(s). It is very important
to have this foundation of Mathematics and Mathematical thinking for all
students to enable them to achieve in the higher Mathematics of Middle and High
school. The county has adopted a new
series call Investigations for grades K-4 with 5th to follow next year to
ensure that our students will improve mathematical literacy before they leave
elementary school.
