Dear Parents,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and to inform you of several happenings in our classroom this year.

I have taught first, second, and third grades at Bel Air Elementary School in eastern Prince William County.  I was also the Reading Specialist there for four years. This is my sixth year at Bristow Run. I am happy to say that this is my thirty fifth year of teaching!  I am very excited to be teaching 3rd grade again at Bristow Run this year.

Our daily schedule will include Language Arts/Reading and Encore Specials in the mornings.  The afternoons will be busy with Math and Science or Social Studies.  Lunch is scheduled from 1:05 – 1:35.  I encourage you to purchase your child a lunch ticket to eliminate lost money and tears at lunchtime.  More information can be found on the lunch menu.  Your child may also bring in a snack daily to eat since we have such a late lunchtime.  Snacks should be something that can be eaten quickly with no “mess.”

The first day of school we will have P.E.   The second day we will have Music and day three will be Science Lab. Day four will be Art and day five will be P.E.   Day six will be Computer Lab and day seven will be Library. The cycle will then repeat itself with one change.  The students will alternate their Computer Lab day with a Math day.  I know this sounds very confusing, but once we begin the cycle, it will be easier to understand.

A folder will be sent home every Friday with your child’s papers, tests, newsletters, etc.  This folder is to be returned to school the following Monday.  You may keep the contents of the folder each week.  This folder will enable you to review the papers with your child and it will also help to keep our lines of communication open.

Homework assignments will begin next Monday.  Your child will have a Daily Agenda Each to record their homework in. This agenda will need to travel back and forth between home and school daily.  A daily requirement is that each child read 20-30 minutes per night.  In addition, there may be a short additional assignment, or reviewing for a test. There is a place each day for a parent signature, but I do not require you to sign it each day as long as your child has their homework.  Homework is a very important part of your child’s preparation each day.  I will discuss this in more detail at the Back to School Night for grades 1 and 3 that is scheduled for Tuesday, September 20th at 7:00 p.m.

I am looking forward to working with you to make this year a very successful and positive school experience for your child.

                                                          Sincerely,

                                 Mrs. Lee Ann Hollins
