ENTERING KINDERGARTEN

 

As a part of your regular routine of reading with your child, choose one book from each of the following five categories. (5 books total)

  • Read the book to your child. Then go back a 2nd time and discuss the illustrations and the main idea (what happened.)
  • Have your child illustrate their favorite part.
  • Have your child dictate a sentence about their picture.
  • Please make sure that your child’s name, the title author and their dictation is written on each illustrated page.

1.  Read any ALPHABET BOOK, such as

-These books help to introduce the letters of the alphabet as well as sounds associated with each letter.

2.  Read any COUNTING BOOK, such as

            Big Fat Hen     Keith Baker

            One Crow:  A Counting  Rhyme     Jim Aylesworth

-These books integrate number and counting skills with good literature.

  3.  Read any NURSERY RHYME BOOK, such as

            The Real Mother Goose

            Rhyme books by Paul Galdone

-These books help children learn about rhyming and ending sounds of words.

4.  Read any SERIES BOOK, such as

            “Bright and Early Books for Beginning Readers” (such as Dr. Seuss)

            “I Can Read It All By Myself” (such as Go Dog, Go)

            Curious George books     H.A. Rey

-These books have lots of repetition and basic sight words to help your child with kindergarten skills.

5.  Read any FAVORITE AUTHOR BOOK, such as

  • These are authors that have a variety of books available with excellent text      and illustrations for the primary level.

·        The above listed books are simply suggestions.  You may choose any one book from each category.

 

 

Entering FIRST GRADE

 

*Please pick five titles to read to or with your child.  Please have your child draw and write their favorite part of the story.  Bring the journals back to school in September.
