November 2003

Hello Panthers!

November? I still remember the anticipation and excitement of getting ready to start the new school year and now here we are already in November. Well, it has been an Awesome first 9 weeks. Even losing those 2 days to the hurricane, the year has still started off fairly smoothly.

We spent the first month getting to know our students both personally and academically. Your children probably came home sometime in late September and early October and said, “We took another test!!” This year we added a new component to our student assessment piece for 2nd-5th grades. We pre-tested all students in those grades with a program called Test for Higher Standards. This is a program used by many schools in Prince William County and other counties in Virginia. It provides us with an item analysis of SOL objectives and lets us see where our instructional focus should be for each student. In addition, students in Kg-3rd grade are taking the state sponsored PALS assessment. More information on PALS will be shared by your teacher at conference times. PALS is a diagnostic tool that we can use to identify student language needs and strengths. These assessments, along with CMS, will help us pinpoint student needs and areas of curriculum on which we should focus.

It has been great to see so many of you at our Family Fun Night “Movie Night”, Back to School Nights, conference nights, Spirit Nights at Burger King and Baja Fresh, Field day, volunteering in the classrooms, for classroom celebrations and in the cafeteria during lunch. If you have not had a chance to meet with your child’s classroom teacher call now and schedule an appointment. I am hoping that we have 100 percent turn out for the Parent conference days. Your child’s teacher wants to meet with you. As you know, our school motto is:  “A Team on Track for the Future”.  At Bristow Run we recognize that it takes all of us (Teachers, Staff, Students & Parents) working together to ensure the success of each student. We truly believe that by working together all children will learn to their fullest potential.   I look forward to continuing to work with you and your children this year.

Thanks for all you have done to help us have such a wonderful first 9 -weeks of school. I anticipate an Awesome 2nd 9 weeks too.

Sincerely, Andrew Buchheit, Principal of - “The Best School in the County” - Bristow Run Elementary School

ADVISORY COUNCIL

Each school in Prince William County has a School Advisory Council comprised of parent representatives, teachers and staff representatives. The Advisory Council helps decide on the focus and direction that the school should take each year. It sets these goals out in our Annual School Plan. Anyone can attend an Advisory Council meeting. We meet on the first Tuesday of the month at 6:30 pm.

Congratulations to all students who have earned one of these two academic recognitions.

ATTENDANCE IN SCHOOL

It is very important that all students attend school on a regular basis and on time. Children, who are not in school each day, arrive late or leave early miss important educational opportunities and learning experiences. At Bristow Run, we recognize, and I’m sure you will agree, that regularly being at school and being on time is very important for a child’s academic success. This may become a very serious issue.

It is important to note that Prince William County policy states that: “students in kindergarten through grade eight, who miss ten or more days of school for the year, excused or unexcused, and who have completed little or no make-up work may be considered for retention.” In addition, we are required to notify our Attendance Officer in cases of excessive absences. It takes both students and parents working together to assure a child attend school as required. Your cooperation in helping your child get to school is very important. If you would like to work with our guidance counselors, MaryPat McCartney or Robin Vaneman, to make a plan for improvement or discuss these issues, you can contact them at 703-753-7741.

Please continue to call in to let us know if your child is going to be absent and to send in notes to the teacher when he or she returns to school. As you already know, all our procedures and regulations are in place to help ensure the safety, security and continued success of all our students and not to inconvenience you. By working together, we truly can do everything better. Please let us know if you have questions or concerns by calling 703-753-7741. We thank you in advance for your support.

Every 9 weeks, we will recognize students for “Perfect Attendance” -  meaning they have attended school each day and have no tardies in a 9 week period or  “Excellent Attendance” – meaning they have attended school each day and have no more than 3 tardies in a 9 week period..

NEWS FROM MS.TOTH – YOUR ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Standardized Testing News

Well, in October our fourth graders completed their first standardized tests for the year.  Parents you can expect the Stanford 9 Achievement Scores by the end of the December.  These will go home with students.

Our third graders will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) in November to assess the development of their verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal reasoning and problem solving skills.  Our students will be testing November 13, 18 and 19.  The results should be in early January.

Your child needs your help to prepare and get ready for these tests with encouragement, a good night’s rest and a nutritional breakfast the day of testing.  Please plan doctor’s appointments and things around these dates if possible.  Testing is done first thing in the morning so it is important that your child is not tardy. If they are tardy, they will be held in the office until the testing session is complete and will be tested under make-up conditions on another school day.  We understand this is a stressful time for your child.  If you have concerns please feel free to contact our guidance counselors Mrs. McCartney/ Mrs.Vaneman to assist your child with some coping strategies.  If you have any questions about testing contact Ms. Toth.

School Spirit – Panther Pride

Each Thursday on the announcements I share facts and info about Bristow Run and what Panther Pride is all about.  So far… school colors (what you wear on Thursdays), Character Counts, panthers – which are actually black leopards, “Team on Track for the Future” our motto and there is much more to come.  Please encourage your child to show their Panther Pride each Thursday by wearing purple and/or teal or their Spirit Wear to school.  We are a great school – we need to celebrate that each Thursday and one Friday a month on School Spirit Day.

With Panther Pride, Ms. Jo Linda Toth, Assistant Principal

2nd Grade The Second Grade Team would like to thank parents for all your support in helping to make our first quarter so successful!  We are looking forward to an exciting second quarter!   We have many topics to cover but second graders are up to the challenge of learning as much as they can! As we read each day, we’ll continue to practice the strategies that good readers use before reading, during reading and after reading.  And of course we’ll continue to add to our AR totals! Second graders already see their own progress in writing.  We’ll continue to use and apply the writing process.  Look for more of our creations in the hallway!  We’ll also learn to recognize verbs, nouns, pronouns, synonyms and antonyms. In math we’ll study money (counting change to $2.00), time to the quarter hour, fractions, skip counting and patterns.  We also continue to memorize addition and subtraction facts for speed drills. Our social studies topics will be: Map skills – locating continents, oceans, rivers, mountains, the Great Lakes, the equator and constructing our own maps. Economics – natural, human and capital resources, barter and scarcity and

Community changes over time. And our science topics will be: The three types of matter, Weather and the water cycle and Living systems (ecosystems)

Third Grade  - The third graders will be studying fables, folktales, and research in language arts this quarter.  We will be researching animals and their habitats.  We will even be writing our own fables after reading some of Aesop’s.  We will also begin cursive.  In math we will be completing addition and subtraction with regrouping.  In third grade subtracting over 00 is new.  We will continue our multiplication dances to complete 2-9 fact songs.  We will also study money, time, and fractions. In science & social studies the third grade will be switching classes.  Mrs. Ferreira’s and Mrs. Hollins’s class will be switching with each other.  They will be covering the following objectives: explorers, economics, Mali, Earth, Sun , and Moon, water cycle, and natural events and human influences on survival. Mrs. Manning will be teaching Mrs. Rauhala’s class about government and civics, the Sun, Moon, and Earth, Mali, and energy sources. Mrs. Rauhala will be teaching Ms. Callaway’s class about Greece and Rome, soil, and Famous Americans. Ms. Callaway will be teaching Mrs. Manning’s class about matter, simple machines and explorers.  With the teachers being specialized in the few objectives they teach, the students will have a stronger experience and understanding of what they are learning in science and social studies.  Please feel free to contact any third grade teacher with questions about your child’s education.

Fourth Grade -     We’re off to a great start!  The fourth graders have been enjoying activities such as orange geography, pumpkin math, and Miss Betty’s Trunk!  In the upcoming weeks we will be introducing the Scientific Method for the required January Science Fair.  Each individual class will continue their own Science Units.  In Math, students should practice their addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts daily.  Our Virginia Studies will continue with colonial Virginia and include the New Nation and Government.  Each class will begin the Virginia Project, an in class assignment.  In Writing, students will be building on paragraph formation and developing grammatical skills.  Please encourage your child to read every night and complete the Book-It calendar or AR requirements.  Finally, please remember to sign student agendas daily, it is required!

Fifth Grade -      The Bristow run science fair is just around the corner. Mrs. Stephens and Mrs. Glenning have begun planning for this event which will take place on Thursday, January 29, 2004 at 6:30 pm. A parent information night has been scheduled for Tuesday, November 18 at 7:00 pm. Mary Keen, our Science Instructional Support Teacher will offer suggestions to help plan a successful science fair project. The fifth grade is also looking forward to our first field trip. We will be attending “A Christmas Carol” on December 2nd at George Mason University. Plans have been made to travel to Philadelphia, Pa in April.

Mrs. Husar’s classes

Students working with Mrs. Husar have been very busy in many areas of study. Some are involved in the Herman Reading Program, which is a multi-sensory approach to reversing reading difficulties. Other students have been completing hands-on Math activities to complement the skills taught in the regular classroom. A timer provides an extra incentive and encourages us to work quickly. Several students enjoy the challenge of beating their previous time with sets of flashcards.  Creative writing stories are taking shape with the use of cut-out characters and specific vocabulary. Our favorite part of this writing process is sharing the stories and movable characters with the class. We have also been looking closely at comprehension, author’s purpose, vocabulary, character development, and sequencing. Students have also been developing and working towards achieving personal academic goals. We have set our sights on completing assignments at a level that is our personal best. Students are taking pride in meeting these goals head on!    Go for it!!.

LIBRARY

There's a lot of excitement in the library this week.  All five books in the Harry Potter series are on Accelerated Reader.  Along with Harry Potter there are another 153 new tests added this week.  Our accelerated reader program is off to an excellent start with over 2406 points. Super job! Book Fair is coming November 17th-21st.  Watch for the information coming home with your child very soon. The Birthday Book response has been great again this year.  If you would like to purchase a Birthday Book in honor of your child's birthday you can do this anytime.  The price of the book is $15.00.  A name plate goes in the front of the book with your child's name on the name plate.  Thank you for your wonderful support of our library. We are looking for some volunteers to help us in the library.  If you have a spare hour we could use your help.  With all the added classes this year we need you.  We appreciate all our volunteers and this is one place where you would help all our students.

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE

Bristow Run has a very active computer lab.  Reconfigured computers were sent from other county departments, and some very wonderful parents have been helping to re-load software on all of the workstations.  Accelerated Math is now available to fourth and fifth grades.  Math Facts in a Flash will soon be available school wide.  ISIS is available through the PWCS web site.  This provides an opportunity for parents to check student emergency card records and attendance.  Elementary classroom information and grades are not available through ISIS.  You can obtain these through your child’s teacher

READING TIPS by Mrs. Shaver, Bristow Run Reading Specialist

Run has once again started his travels across the United States.  He has already visited Maine & Kansas and is headed toward the Dakotas.  The children are steadily earning AR points to keep our panther pal on the move.  As many parents know, children can improve athletic and musical talents through practice.  The same holds true for reading.  Children need to practice their reading skills by reading at home each day.  There is a direct correlation between the amount of time a child spends reading and how well the child scores on a standardized reading test.  By just reading twenty minutes a day at home, a child can score twenty percentile points higher on a standardized test than the child who reads only ten minutes a day.  Just think how much reading your child could do just while you wait at the light at Linton Hall Rd. & Rte. 29!  Read, read, read to succeed!

Bristow Run Music Notes

KG & 1st grade classes have been working on singing in unison and listening to music that has LOUD and soft sections. The Grizzly Bear and the Old Gray Cat are two fun selections. 2nd graders have been working on following the steady beat and singing fun songs in unison. Song Time and I Have a Car are two of our favorites. 3rd, 4th & 5th graders in general music have been working on the soprano recorder. Good tone production, position and note reading are objectives we are working on. We will continue into the next 9 weeks. Students need to be prepared with recorders and have a music folder for the music that is passed out to them in class. Look for some practice papers to come home soon.

5th grade string students are sounding wonderful. They have learned so much in a few short weeks. Ask your student to show you what they have learned.

Panther Chorus - The Panther Chorus has sixty members this year. Forty fourth graders auditioned for chorus and twenty were chosen to join with the forty fifth graders already participating.  The chorus recorded a song about the Pillars of Character that was used on morning announcements during character counts week.

PROGRAM - TUESDAY NIGHT—DECEMBER 16 AT 7:30 -Panther chorus and strings will present a concert. Please mark your calendars for a wonderful evening of music.

AFTERNOON   SING ALONG—DECEMBER 19 - Students will come together for a joyous time of singing winter and holiday songs.

****REQUEST If you are a musician please let me know so that I can contact you about sharing your talent with the students here at Bristow Run.

What a NOTE worthy start to our school year. Mrs. Lynn Maletick

ART UPCOMING EVENTS

Kg classes are learning about shapes and lines through various seasonal painting and activities. They will be learning about patterns, texture, and three-dimensional works of art also. 1st Grade classes will be using line and shapes to create images.  Classes will also be focusing on parts of a landscape, understanding sources of inspiration, use of color, and size relationship. 2nd Grade classes will be focusing upon the art of Native Americans, color, form, and value.  The Art of Ancient Civilizations will also be covered. 3rd Grade classes will be learning about symmetry, figure ground, and the Art of Mail. 4th Grade Classes are continuing to learn about the role of arts and crafts in Colonial Virginia. We will also be exploring sculpture, architecture, and design principles. 5th Grade classes will continue work on Mask making. Each student has made a plaster cast mask that will be painted. We will also be covering perspective, color, painting, and drawing.

GUIDANCE

           Counselors’ Corner

Lessons Center on Student Needs

Guidance lessons this first marking period focused on the “Good Worker” unit in grades K-2 and interpersonal, “STARWORKS” Skills in grades 3-5.  Mrs. McCartney and Mrs. Vaneman taught the younger students about their important job here at school. Lessons covered a positive attitude toward work, organization of school tools, teamwork/cooperation, goal setting to get work done, and future career possibilities. For the older students, the STARWORKS skills included the following: How to Show Empathy, How to Manage Feelings, How to Express Feelings, How to Respect Differences, How to Be an Active Listener, and How to Solve a Problem with a Friend. All skills utilize the 4 steps of the STAR process: Stop, Think, Act, Review. Students were encouraged to practice these skills because they will help them get along with people now and in the future.

Character Counts EVERYWHERE

Again this year, we are highlighting the six “pillars” of the Character Counts Program: Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Trustworthiness, Caring and Citizenship. These important traits are very much a part of life at Bristow Run. The Guidance Department recently sponsored school-wide participation in National Character Counts Week (Oct. 20-24) and urged parents to “catch” students exhibiting the six pillars. It takes a team effort (school and home) to help youngsters foster good character.

“First Friends” Help New Students

Ten 4th graders have been trained to welcome new students who enter throughout the school year. These “First Friends” are: Courtney Kulik, Gavin Tomlin, Atal Naim, Kristen Ward, Victoria Buchheit, Marwan Khalil, Cristian Baires, Meagan Walsh, Taylor Edwards, and Jasmin Gardner. Their job will involve taking new students on a tour of the building, giving new students coupons from the cafeteria, library, etc. and answering questions (peer to peer). The First Friends program is an example of students helping students.

Counseling Services Offered

Our counselors offer group counseling on topics such as Work Habits, Social Skills, and Parental Divorce/ Separation. Groups meet once a week during the school day (usually lunch time) for 6 to 8 weeks. Referrals for individual counseling may come from parents, staff, the Child Study Committee, the Administration, or the students themselves. Parent permission is required for any kind of ongoing counseling.

Parent Tea Held October 8

Our counselors were available for a special presentation at the Parent Tea held the morning of October 8. The topic was “How To Talk So Kids Will Listen, and Listen So Kids Will Talk”. The eleven parents who attended learned some simple communication strategies to try and were able to share ideas with each other.

Career Day Scheduled for January 23

Parents, please contact your child’s teacher if you are willing to speak to one or two classes on Friday, Jan. 23, 2004. You could help make our 6th annual Career Day the best one yet! Volunteers make this a special day of learning for our students.

CMS TESTS

All 2nd-5th grade students will be administered various curriculum subject area assessments called CMS, that are designed to assess how well a student has understood and mastered a subject and prepare students for SOL tests in 2nd-4th grades. Both the CMS tests and the SOL tests assess the state mandated curriculum and let us know how well students are learning the information that we are teaching. Grades may be given on CMS tests. Due to standardized nature of these tests being used in all schools in Prince William County, however, we are not allowed to send the tests home. If you ever want to review a test to see why your child made a particular grade or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher to set up a time for you to meet with her or him to go over the test. Teachers will continue to provide study guides for most CMS tests. Please continue to help your students study for tests.

INK JET RECYCLING PROGRAM

Did you know that we collect used Ink Jet cartridges to recycle? For each cartridge we recycle our school earns money. Money from this recycling program is often designated for our technology needs. Put it in a small bag so that your child does not get messy and have him or her drop it off in our big recycling container in the front lobby.

. Going Home  - Walkers and Bus Riders

It is important for everyone’s safety to remember the following when walking or riding the bus home.  Walkers need to plan their trip so they don’t arrive at school before 8:55 am.  While walking, students should stay away from the road and not throw any items.  Bus riders also need to be careful at the bus stop to use good character by not throwing things or playing sports at the bus stop we don’t want anyone to get hurt. Remember, if you change your child’s method of going home, please send in a note.

Car Riders

If you pick up your child each day, remember to get a number from our guidance counselors. In the morning, please have your child unload on the right side of your car.  They have to walk in front of or behind cars if they exit on the left side of your vehicle.  Also Mr. Uhtoff, our school parking lot monitor has asked us to pass along that he would like everyone including adults to walk on the sidewalk at all times. If you park in the spaces in front of the school please walk around to the sidewalk instead of walking in the street. This serves as a good model for our students.  Safety is our number one priority!!

Family Reading Night

We are inviting all our parents and their children to come to school on Wednesday, November 20 at 7:00 pm to join us for our First Family Reading Night. Bring a book or two for everyone in your group with you. Bring a blanket and some snacks. At 7:00 pm, we will close down the Book Fair and move to the cafeteria and gym where we will spread out on the floor and read together.
