GIFTED PROGRAM

Henderson Elementary School has a site-based gifted program.  Identified gifted students receive gifted education services outside their regular classroom on a weekly basis.  Two gifted education teachers work with Henderson gifted students.  Mrs. Colleen Kendrick works with students in Kindergarten through third grade in the START Program.  Mrs. Tanya Tarbutton works with fourth and fifth grade gifted students.  Both teachers also serve as a resource to classroom teachers by providing instructional support and strategies, feedback on student progress, and assistance in the identification of gifted students.

Gifted services at Henderson afford opportunities for students to maximize their potential and develop into creative producers of knowledge.  Some of these learning opportunities include:

  • acceleration and enrichment
  • creative and productive thinking
  • critical thinking and problem solving
  • research
  • communication skills
  • independent study

Our goal is to support, extend, and enrich the Prince William County curriculum and the Virginia Standards of Learning.

The Gifted Identification Process:

Gifted students are those whose abilities and potential are so outstanding in relation to their peers that they require additional services to meet their educational needs.  Prince William County identifies such students and designs education programs to develop these strengths.

Prince William County uses a multi-criteria identification process to determine a student’s eligibility.  Information is gathered from a variety of sources and includes:

  • Aptitude test scores
  • School achievement measures (grades, ability level, SOL test scores)
  • Student work samples
  • Observations from the student’s parents and teachers

To begin the identification process, please complete the referral form and return the form to the Henderson front office.   If you prefer to mail your completed form, please send it to the address below:

Transfer Student Procedures:
As identification criteria and services vary greatly among localities, transfer students who have received gifted education services in other school divisions will not automatically receive services in Prince William County.  The gifted resource teacher will review the student’s files and Prince William County’s formal identification process will be initiated.  If appropriate, data required for identification will be collected and combined with data from the student’s previous school.  An eligibility meeting will be held within 65 school days to determine eligibility.  When enrolling, please inform the office staff of the student’s previous gifted identification status.
