Black Holes

Black holes are gravity gone MAD.  They are a rip in space and time.  Some scientists think that these "holes" in space and time are gateways into parallel universes.  The Milky Way has a super massive black hole at its center called Sagittarius A.  Surrounding Sagittarius A is a huge amount of cosmic gas swirling near the black hole's entrance.  The gas is moving so quickly it shines very brightly.  This bright swirling gas around a black hole is called a quasar.

Matter, which has gravity, puts dents in space and time much as a basketball would put a dent in a water bed.  The more mass an object has, the larger the dent it makes. When a very large star starts to die it falls in on itself (collapses).  These stars have millions of times more mass than Earth.  The star gets smaller and smaller as it dies because of its lack of fuel (hydrogen).  There is so much mass in such a tiny space that it actually tears a hole in the fabric of space and time, just as a very tiny but extremely heavy marble would tear a hole in a water bed.
