Little Red Riding Hood A little girl meets a hungry wolf in the forest while on her way to visit her sick grandmother.
The Three Billy Goats Gruff 3 clever billy goats outwit a big ugly troll that lives under the bridge they must cross on their way up the mountain.
A Color of His Own A sad chameleon wants his own distinctive color.
Freight Train Helps children to identify colors.
Ten-Nine-Eight Numbers from ten to one are part of this lullaby which observes the room of a little girl going to bed.
Big Red Barn Rhymed text and illustrations introduce the many different animals that live in the red barn.
School Bus Takes readers through the morning hours, when the buses roll, to collect children from their parents and deposit them at different schools.

* The Napping House In this cumulative tale, a wakeful flea atop a number of sleeping creatures causes a commotion, with just one bite.
Just Like Daddy A very young bear describes all the activities he does during the day that are just like his daddy's. 
Mooncake Bear builds a rocket to take him to the moon so he can taste it. 
Bears on Wheels Basic sight words are used to tell a fun story of a bear on wheels. 
New Shoes for Sylvia  Somewhere in Central America a little girl receives new red shoes from her tia (aunt) in the United States. The shoes are too big, but she finds other uses for them until she grows into them. 
* Fire! Fire!  This factual book explains how fire fighters fight fires in the city, in the country, in the forest, and on the waterfront. It realistically details fire fighting processes, labels fire fighting equipment, and represents fire fighting personnel of all sorts. 
* Goodnight Moon Goodnight to each of the objects in the great green room: goodnight chairs, goodnight comb, goodnight air. 
* Are You My Mother? A little bird tries to find his mother. 
Spiders  This factual book teaches about spiders with easy to understand text and colorful illustrations. 
Goldilocks and the Three Bears This is a  retold story which has beautiful illustrations which add to the story.
Each Peach, Pear, Plum Characters from Mother Goose and well known folk tales appear in an "I spy" text pattern.
Ask Mr. Bear Danny's mother is having a birthday and he doesn't know what to get her.
The Three Billy Goats Gruff Three brother goats find a way to trick a mean troll.
The Three Little Pigs Classic tale of 3 pigs learning a valuable lesson.

* Blueberries for Sal Little Sal and Little Bear both lose their mothers while eating blueberries and almost end up with the other's mother.
* The Little Engine That Could This story is about a persistent little engine that overcomes adversity.
Green Eggs and Ham In verse Sam-I-Am tells of the virtues of green eggs and ham.
* Caps for Sale A peddler gets his caps stolen by monkeys.
Timothy Goes to School Timothy learns about being accepted and making friends during the first week of his first year at school.
I Went Walking During the course of a walk, a young boy identifies animals of different colors.

*  Miss Nelson Is Missing A teacher decides to use an unusual substitute to teach her unruly class to behave.

Miss Rumphius  This is the story of a lady who loved the sea and wanted to travel to faraway lands and do something to make the world more beautiful. 
Ant Cities  Children will learn all about ants and the way they live. The book provides facts through text, illustrations, and labels. The children are provided with directions for constructing their own ant farms. 
Eating Fractions  A math concept book uses food to explain fractions from whole to halves, thirds, and fourths.
* Tikki Tikki Tembo This Chinese tale explains why parents give their children short names. It involves what's in a name, safety, trickery, and problem solving.
Tutankhamen's Gift His tutor foresees that little T's gift for the gods will some day be revealed. That day comes sooner than expected. The young boy becomes Pharaoh after his brother's death, and he rebuilds the beautiful temples created by his father and destroyed by hisbrother.
* Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day Alexander has the kind of day that is one mishap after another.  He thinks about moving to Australia just to get away from his bad luck.
* The Story of the White House Photographs fill this information book about the history of Washington, D.C. and the White House.
* Rumpelstiltskin Zelinsky's classic fairy tale won a Caldecott Honor medal for its rich jewel toned, colorful, detailed illustrations.
The Art Lesson A story about a boy who loves to draw.
Lyle, Lyle Crocodile This is a story of the adventures and misadventures of a crocodile living with a family in the city.
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie This is a hilarious story about the consequences of giving a mouse a cookie.

* Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears An African folk tale of animals is told in sequence and is an excellent multicultural selection.
How Many Days to America?  When soldiers come, Father informs his family that they must leave their home and travel to America. The journey in the disabled boat in the open sea is fraught with dangers. 
* Muggie Maggie In eight short chapters, Maggie resists mastering cursive writing in the third grade until she discovers its advantages. 
A Story, a Story  This African story explains how Kwaku Ananse, the spider man, outwits the powerful Sky God by bringing stories to his people. 
Reasons for a Flower  Illustrations colorfully support the factual text providing visual cues about seeds, flowers,  plants, and the animals who eat them. 
* Amazing Grace Grace wants to play Peter Pan in her class play. Her classmates naively say she cannot be Peter.  When she shares her feelings at home, Grace's grandmother encourages her to believe in herself and to reach for her dreams. 
Anansi and the Moss Covered Rock  This African folk tale presents a lazy spider who uses tricks to fool other animals but finally gets caught and learns a lesson. 
Celebrations  This poetry collection celebrates sixteen landmark days of the year. The poems begin with New Year's Eve and travel through the calendar to Christmas Eve. 
Arrow to the Sun This Pueblo legend explains how the spirit of the Lord of the sun was brought to the world.
Something Big Has Been Here  This book is a collection of humorously illustrated, funny poems on a variety of topics.
Too Many Tamales Maria is helping her family make tamales for the traditional Christmas family gathering. She decides to try on her mother's diamond ring while making tamales. The rest of the story deals with Maria trying to find the ring.
Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch Mr. Hatch is a tall, thin man who never smiles or talks to anyone. One day something extraordinary happens:
 he receives a box of candy as big as a table. Mr. Hatch's gift encourages him to make the effort to be a part of his community. When he discovers the post office made a mistake, his new friends help him keep his new attitude.
Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters, an African Tale In this African Cinderella story, the king uses more than just beauty to choose his queen.

* Weather Forecasting This book gives the reader a behind-the-scenes look at a modern weather station.

The Monster in the Third Dresser Drawer Adam Joshua copes with changes such as moving to a new town, a new tooth, a baby-sitter, and Great Aunt Emily.

* The Rough-face Girl  In this Algonquin Indian version of Cinderella, the Cinderella character is scarred from tending the fire, and her two beautiful but heartless sisters compete for the affections of the Invisible Being. 
Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters, an African Tale  In this African Cinderella story, the king uses more than just beauty to choose his queen. 
Boxcar Children  Four orphaned children take refuge in an old boxcar to avoid being sent to live with a grandfather whom they think does not want them. 
* Beezus and Ramona Beezus wants to love her little sister but Ramona is just impossible! When Mom and her beloved sister, Aunt Beatrice, share some childhood memories, Beezus feels that maybe there is hope.
Dear Mr. Henshaw  This story is told in letters written by sixth grader, Leigh Botts, to the author of his favorite books, and is a portrayal of a child in a single parent home
If You're Not Here, Please Raise Your Hand  This collection of school poems captures the excitement, challenge, heartbreak, and wonder of elementary school life. 
The People Could Fly: American Black Folk Tales  Twenty-four tales are divided into four groups: animal tales, fantasy tales, tales of the supernatural, and tales of freedom. 
* Bunnicula Chester the cat believes that he has discovered a vampire rabbit.
Fables This Caldecott winner is a collection of one page fables.
* Wayside School is Falling Down More humorous episodes from the classroom on the thirtieth floor of Wayside School, where students learn to tango, face the cafeteria's dreaded Mushroom Surprise, and study a hobo during Show and Tell.
Abel's Island In this fantasy survival story, a Victorian mouse battles physical elements and overcomes loneliness and despair.
* The Green Book Vivid writing tells the story of a family from the future who must leave Earth to colonize a new planet.
* There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom An unmanageable but lovable eleven-year-old misfit learns to believe in  himself when he gets to know the new school counselor, who is a sort of misfit too.
Fantastic Mr. Fox Three farmers, each one meaner than the other, try all-out warfare to get rid of the fox and his family.
Brave Irene Irene is  determined to deliver a dress her mother has made to the dutchess, even though the weather would prevent an adult.
Looking for Pa Jacob and his sister Jesssie go in search of their father. They travel through the countryside of Northern Virginia, and wind up in the first major battle of the Civil War, at Bull Run, near Manassas.
Sylvester and the Magic Pebble Sylvester finds a magic pebble that can make wishes come true.
Charley Skedaddle After twelve year old Charley Quinn's brother is killed at Gettysburg, the New York Bowery boy enlists as a drummer boy in the Union Army and is sent to Virginia. My Side of the Mountain  In this stirring story about a fifth grade boy's survival in the Catskills, the author uses authentic details to present nature. 
From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler  A bored twelve year old girl talks her nine year old brother into running away to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The two survivalists sleep, dine, bathe, and play among the centuries old art. 
Island of the Blue Dolphins  This Newbery winner, whose setting is an island off the coast of California in the early 1800's, tells of a  young Indian girl's courage and survival. 
Rosa Parks, My Story  Written in her own straightforward and moving language, this compelling biography addresses the deliberate choices that earn Rosa Parks the title "Mother to a Movement". 
Pink and Say Say Curtis describes his meeting with Pinkus Aylee, a Black soldier, during the Civil War and their capture by Southern troops. This tale of Civil War valor had been passed through several generations of the author's family.
The True Story of the Three Little Pigs! Children may think they know the story of The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf, but they don't. This is the real version told only as the victim, the wolf, can tell it.
Call It Courage A survival story in which Mafatu defies a taboo, steals a much needed spear from an idol, fights dangerous animals, and escapes from cannibals. Having proven himself, Mafatu returns to his former life.
Journey to Topaz In this story, 110,000 Japanese-Americans are forced to leave their homes and live in internment camps in the United States.
Follow the Drinking Gourd Winter's book tells the story of the Underground Railway, the road to freedom during pre-Civil War days.
Dear Mr. Henshaw Cleary's book is an honest portrayal of a child in a single-parent family.
* Stone Fox This touching story is based on a Rocky Mountain legend of a ten-year-old boy and his attempt to pay back taxes on his grandfather's farm.
* Bunnicula Could a pet rabbit really be a vampire? Chester the Cat sets out to prove to the human family that he is right.
Beetles, Lightly Toasted Andy's entering the 5th grade essay contest stirs his imagination to creative heights as he competes with his know-it-all cousin by making recipes with some unusual food sources and testing them on unaware friends and family.
The Egypt Game The first time Melanie Ross meets April Hall, she's not sure they'll have anything in common. But she soon discovers that they both love anything to do with ancient Egypt.
