Cat in the Hat A fantastic cat entertains two children in a most unusual way.
Cat on the Mat  A cat meets many interesting animals.
A Chair for My Mother  The story is the first in a trilogy about a family of three women: Grandma, Mama, and Rosa. In this story, the family struggles to save loose change (in a jar) to buy a chair for Mama who works long hours as a waitress.
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom  An alphabet rhyme/chant that relates what happens when the whole alphabet tries to climb a coconut tree.
Color Zoo Introduces colors and shapes with illustrations of shapes on die-cut pages that form animal faces when placed on top of one another.
Froggy Learns to Swim Froggy is afraid of the water until his mother, along with his flippers, snorkel, and mask, help him learn to swim.
Goldilocks and the Three Bears  Lost in the woods, a tired and hungry girl finds the house of the three bears where she helps herself to food and goes to sleep.
Have You Seen My Duckling? A mother duck leads her brood around the pond as she searches for one missing duckling.
Hop on Pop Pairs of rhyming words are introduced and used in simple sentences.
I Read Signs Introduces signs and symbols frequently seen along the street.
It Begins with A Rhyming riddles challenge the reader to guess objects beginning with the letters A to Z.
The Little Engine that Could This story is about a persistent little engine who overcomes adversity.

Richard Scarry's Best Mother Goose Ever A colorfully illustrated collection of fifty traditional Mother Goose rhymes.
Ten Apples Up on Top A lion, a dog, and a tiger balance apples on their heads. 
Ten Black Dots A counting book that shows what can be done with ten black dots.
The Three Little Pigs Retells the fatal episodes in the lives of two foolish pigs and how the third pig managed to avoid the same.
Tomie DePaola's Mother Goose An illustrated collection of 204 Mother Goose nursery rhymes, both the well known and less familiar ones.
The Very Busy Spider The farm animals try to divert a busy little spider from spinning her web, but she persists and produces a thing of both beauty and usefulness.
Where the Wild Things Are A naughty little boy, sent to bed without his supper, sails to the land of wild things where he becomes their king.

 All by Myself All the many things a young child can do independently are demonstrated, (tying shoes, riding a bike, kicking a ball) but there is one thing one cannot do alone.

Blueberries for Sal Little Sal and Little Bear both lose their mothers while eating blueberries and almost end up with the other's mother.

My Many Colored Days This rhyming story describes each day in terms of a particular color which in turn is associated with specific emotions.
The Napping House In this cumulative tale, a wakeful flea atop a number of sleeping creatures causes a commotion, with just one bite.
Rosie's Walk Although unaware that a fox is after her as she takes a walk around the farmyard, Rosie the hen still manages to lead him into one accident after another.
School Bus Follows the progress of school buses as they take children to school and bring them home again.
Timothy Goes to School Timothy learns about being accepted and making friends during the first week of his first year at school.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar Follows the progress of a hungry little caterpillar as he eats his way through a varied and very large quantity of food until, full at last, he forms a cocoon around himself and goes to sleep.
We're Going on a Bear Hunt Brave bear hunters go through grass, a river, mud, and other obstacles before the inevitable encounter with the bear forces a headlong retreat.
What Comes in 2's, 3's, & 4's ? Introduces the numbers two, three and four by enumerating the ways in which they occur in everyday life, from your two eyes and two arms to the four seasons of the year.
Zoo Provides a behind-the-scenes look at a working day at the zoo, from the moment the workers arrive until the night guard locks the gate.

Amelia Bedelia A maid comes to work for a family and livens up their lives with a very literal interpretation of words. 
Arthur's Eyes Arthur deals with the necessity of wearing glasses. 
The Biggest Bear Johnny raises a bear cub and has to face the possibility of shooting him when the bear grows up and becomes destructive. 
Clean  Your Room, Harvey Moon!  Harvey tackles a big job: cleaning his room.
Corduroy Corduroy is a stuffed bear who longs to be purchased and taken home by a child who will love him. 
Flat Stanley After a bulletin board falls on Stanley while he's sleeping, he finds that being flat has its advantages. 
Grasshopper on the Road Explores the world of grasshoppers, discussing where they live, how they grow up,  what they eat, and other insects related to them.
If  You Give a Mouse a Cookie This is a hilarious story about the consequences of giving a mouse a cookie.
The Josefina Story Quilt While traveling west with her family in 1850, a young girl makes a patchwork quilt chronicling the experiences of the journey.
The Little House This delightful story takes a house through the four seasons and all the changes that happen to a vacant house.
Magic Tree House Series The Magic Tree House whisks Jack and Annie away on many different adventures all over the world and in different times.
Millions of Cats Being unable to decide on just one cat for a pet, a man and his wife are overrun with millions of them! 
Miss Nelson  Is Missing A teacher decides to use an unusual substitute to teach her unruly class to behave.
Miss Rumphius As a child Great-aunt Alice Rumphius resolved that when she grew up she would go to faraway places, live by the sea in her old age, and do something to make the world more beautiful.  With the last being the most difficult, she does all those things.

A New Coat for Anna A story of observing the changes to a grandfather.
Owl Moon On a winter's night under a full moon, a father and daughter trek into the woods to see the Great Horned Owl.
The Rainbow Fish The most beautiful fish in the ocean finds the answer to happiness and friendship. 
Stellaluna A baby bat learns that bats are not birds when she drops into a birds nest.
Today Was a Terrible Day What makes a day terrible for you?  Is your day ever like this one?
The True Story of the Three Little Pigs The wolf gives his own outlandish version of what really happened when he tangled with the three little pigs.

Case for Jenny Archer After reading three mysteries in a row, Jenny becomes convinced that the neighbors across the street are up to no good and decides to investigate.

Herbie Jones and the Class Gift Disaster strikes when Annabelle trusts Herbie Jones and Raymond with the job of picking up the class's gift to their teacher.
Julian, Secret Agent Twelve short chapters present the escapades of Julian, his brother Huey, and their friend, Gloria, when they become "crimebusters".
Man Out at First After he gets hit by a fast-moving ball, Turtleneck Jones loses his confidence on the baseball diamond and sees his position at first base given to another player.
Miss Nelson Has a Field Day The notorious Miss Swamp reappears at the Horace B. Smedley School, this time to shape up the football team and make them win at least one game.
On the Way Home This book describes the sights and events a frontier family encounters traveling from South Dakota to the Ozarks.
Otherwise Known as Shelia the Great A summer in Tarrytown, N.Y. is fun for ten year old Shelia even though her friends make her face up to some self truths she doesn't want to admit.
Ramona the Brave Six year old Ramona tries to cope with an unsympathetic first grade teacher.
Rocks and Minerals An introduction to the formation and identification of a variety of rocks and minerals.
Soccer An introduction to the rules, techniques, and strategies of soccer with information on leagues and different types of soccer.
Something Big Has Been Here This collection of humorously illustrated, funny poems on a variety of topics will provide inspiration for poetry writing.
Whales and Sea Mammals This book briefly covers the characteristics, types, young, and relatives of whales while also discussing the hunting and protection of these giants of the sea.

Aliens for Breakfast Finding an alien in his cereal box, Richard joins it in a fight to save Earth from the Draines, one of whom is masquerading as a student in his class.
Arthur for the Very First Time Arthur spends the summer with his eccentric aunt and uncle. He is accused of being an observer rather than a doer. This story is full of warmth, humor, and quirky characters, both human and animal. 
Babe the Gallant Pig The pig has a remarkable ability to speak politely to sheep. This gains him a stunning victory in a sheep dog trial meet. This book is one of many humorous animal stories written by this British author. Read the sequel Ace the Very Important Pig.
Bunnicula What if a pet rabbit really is a vampire? Chester the Cat believes he has discovered one and sets out to prove to the human family that he is right. Told by the laconic family dog, Harold, with dog like observations and concerns for food, this first story in the series is humorous and fast moving. 
The Castle in the Attic A gift of a toy castle, complete with a silver knight, introduces William to an adventure involving magic and a personal quest. The sequel is Return to the Castle.
Dear Mr. Henshaw A series of letters from Leigh Botts to the author Mr. Henshaw dealing with Leigh's hopes of becoming an author as well as other concerns of this bright young boy.
The Fear Place On a family camping trip in the wilderness, Doug must overcome his fears to search for his missing brother.
Fourth Grade Rats A young boy learns his best friend is wrong. You don't have to be a tough guy, "a rat", to be a grown up fourth grader.
The Green Book Vivid writing tells the story of a family from the future who must leave Earth to colonize a new planet. How do they survive? What is the importance of stories in a new land? This thought-provoking short novel begins and ends with the same sentence, a magical discovery for fourth graders. The paperback edition often omits the illustration, so be sure to secure a hardbound edition. 
Homer Price McCloskey tells the humorous adventure of an irresponsible boy who comes up with ingenious solutions to strange dilemmas.
If You're Not Here Raise Your Hand A collection of  poems, funny and sad, about life as a student.
Mayfield Crossing When her old school is closed, Meg and her family meet prejudice for the first time. Although Meg and her family face open prejudice from many of the students, she does find that all people are not alike. 
Minty: a Story of a Young Harriet Tubman A story of Harriet Tubman as a child.
The Mysteries of Harris Burdick A collection of illustrations with a one-sentence "story", this book can be used as story starters for a creative writing lesson. The tongue-in-cheek introduction is the story itself and is vital to the book's message. 
The People Could Fly Twenty-four tales are divided into four groups: animal tales, fantasy tales, tales of the supernatural, and tales of freedom.
Skinnybones Life looks hopeless when Alex's losing team has to play TJ's winning team. Can Alex's sense of humor save him this time?
Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing A story about some of the funny and terrible problems that Peter Hatcher has with his little brother Fudge.

Follow the Drinking Gourd Winter's book tells the story of the Underground Railway, the road to freedom during the pre-Civil War days. 
Followers of the North Star Featuring biographical sketches of famous African Americans, these poems are a chronological look at history from the Revolutionary War to space flight.The North Star is followed by people seeking their freedom and following their dreams.
Heartland A poetic tribute to the Midwest region of the United States. The vibrant illustrations reveal the beauty of the patchwork fields, the strength of sun-lined faces of farmers, the pleasures of the seasons, and the awe-inspiring brush with nature. 
Helen Keller: the Story of My Life Traces the life and accomplishments of the woman who struggled to overcome her deaf and blind handicaps, with the aid of her famous teacher, Annie Sullivan.
In the Eyes of the Cat: Japanese Poetry for All Seasons These classic Japanese poems are organized around the seasons of the year. The animals and their activities are depicted in ink and watercolor paintings capturing both the subject and the mood. 
Indian in the Cupboard When a nine-year-old boy receives a plastic Indian, a cupboard, and a key for his birthday, he discovers himself involved in an adventure when the Indian comes to life. This book is one in a series. 
The Light in the Attic A collection of humorous poems and drawings.
Looking for Pa: a Civil War Journal When Ma dies, a brother and sister leave the family's northern Virginia farm to search for their father who has joined the Confederate forces at the Manassas battlefield.
