The purpose of the PWCPS Summer Reading Program is to encourage students to enjoy quality literature and to continue developing their independent reading skills.

     What are the requirements?

     This is a voluntary program.  Students who participate are required to complete a minimum number of readings:

·   Grades K – 2: five books

·  Grades 3 – 5: three books

How do students document their reading?

Grades K – 4 students complete a list of books read.  The documentation is to include author, title, and a parent or guardian statement that the student completed the reading. 

Grades 5 students provide the author, title, publishing information, and an explanation of the general topic or plot of the book along with a parent or guardian statement that the student has completed the reading.

Students who participate in the Prince William Public Library Summer Quest Program  may use that documentation.

What is the reward?

Students:

·                     Build their vocabulary

·                     Develop their reading skills

·                     Enjoy new stories

·                     Learn new information

·                     Receive extra credit

What is meant by extra credit?

Students in Grades K - 2 will receive an S+ for each book completed, for a total of five.  Extra credit will count 10% of      the student’s grade in the affected marking period.

Students in Grades 3 - 5 will receive an extra A (100) for each book completed for a total of three.   Extra credit will count 10% of the student’s grade in the affected marking period.

Kindergarten

Below are some suggested titles and authors for summer reading for Kindergarten. 

Students are not limited to this list. They may read these or other age appropriate books.

 

ABC Books

Read ABC books such as:

The Turn-around, upside-down alphabet book by Lisa Campbell Ernst.

An alphabet book in which each letter becomes three different objects as the book is turned in different directions.

Fairy Tales

Read any fairy tale such as:

One potato, two potato by Cynthia C. DeFelice.

A very poor couple lives such a simple life that they share everything, until the husband discovers a pot with magical powers buried under the very last potato in the garden.

Nursery Rhymes

Read any books of nursery rhymes such as:

Hey diddle diddle & other Mother Goose rhymes by Tomie DePaola

Presents forty-eight familiar Mother Goose rhymes.

 

Brett, Jan

Read any book by this author such as:

Hedgie’s Surprise

Hedgie, the hedgehog, helps Henny, the speckled hen, trick the Tomten who has been eating all of Henny's eggs for breakfast.

 

Carle, Eric

Read any book by this author such as:

The Very Hungry Caterpiller

 Follows a hungry little caterpillar as he eats his way through a varied and very large quantity of food until, full at last, he forms a cocoon around himself and goes to sleep.

 

Keats, Ezra Jack

Read any book by this author such as:

The Snowy Day

Relates the adventures of a little boy in the city on a very snowy day.

The Alphabet Tree

A strong wind blows most of the letters off the alphabet tree and those that remain hide among the branches. Then a bug and a caterpillar come along and teach them how to arrange themselves into words and sentences to form a special message.

Children see a variety of animals, each one a different color, and a mother looking at them.

First Grade

Numbers from ten to one are part of this lullaby which observes the room of a little girl going to bed.

Mama Bear comes up with a plan to correct the Bear family’s rude behavior.

The Mitten

Several animals sleep snugly in Nicki's lost mitten until the bear sneezes.

Arthur's Family Vacation
