Dear Tyler Parents,
On April 24th, Tyler
Elementary held our 2nd Annual Diabetes walk. Tyler students
raised money to promote research and education to help children with
diabetes. The diabetes fundraiser and walk was a huge
success. It was exciting to see the students participating in an
event that promotes qualities of kindness and giving back to the
community. A special thank you goes out to Nurse Kay Hoepker,
Debbie James, and Coach Rekich for coordinating the event and to the
Bull Run Middle School Chamber Band and Orchestra for providing
encouraging and upbeat music for the students. I would like to
also thank all of our Tyler parents who volunteered and participated in
the walk.
Our students are well on their way to reaching our “Spring Into
Reading” Challenge of reading a school total of 500,000 minutes
by May 2nd. Our plan for celebrating reaching this goal will be
to host a DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time on May 9 for 1 hour
outside. Students can bring a blanket, hat, sunglasses and relax
with a good book outside (weather permitting). We will also have
popsicles as part of the celebration for the students.
May 5th-9th is Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week. Please let
your child's teacher know how much you appreciate the time and
dedication they put into their craft and profession. A thoughtful
card from you and your child is a great way to show your
appreciation. May 6th is National Teacher Day.
Finally, SOL Testing in grades 3-5 takes place starting May 19th and
ending June 6. Please review the SOL testing schedule for
specific dates and SOL tests being administered at each grade level.
As we approach the final month and a half of school, I want to thank
each parent for your support and commitment to Tyler Elementary and
your child's education. It is the continuous collaborative
efforts between teacher, parent and student that yield positive
academic results. Please do not hesitate to call if you have any
questions, concerns, or comments.
Sincerely,
Matthew Phythian,
Principal |

School Walk for Diabetes at Tyler Elementary School |
On a warm and sunny Thursday, April 24th, Tyler Tomcats took to the
school athletic fields for a one hour walk-a-thon. Students walked with
excitement and high energy while the Bull Run Middle School Chamber
Band and Orchestra entertained, all in honor of diabetes. The
school walk was not only an activity to promote the building of a
healthy body, but it also marked the end of our fundraiser for the
American Diabetes Association (ADA).
Our fundraiser began with an assembly on April 15. During the assembly
students were introduced to the general principles of both Type 1 and
Type 2 diabetes. Students learned that eating right and staying active
are important ways to prevent Type 2 diabetes. They also learned that
although there is no way to prevent Type 1 diabetes, important research
is improving the treatment and care of diabetes. One day we hope
for a cure.
Tyler students and families provided an amazing response to the
fundraiser. Many students bought red ADA wrist bands. Some
students honored a relative or friend by posting a name on our Walk
with Me Wall of Support, while others collected donations totaling
nearly $8,000.00. We are overwhelmed and thankful for the generosity of the Tyler community.
Attendance in Sixth Grade Requires Tdap Booster
Students enrolling in sixth grade in PWCS must present proof that they
have had a tetanus, diphtheria, and Pertussis (Tdap) booster shot
within the past five years. All fifth grade students must present proof
of this booster before they will be permitted attendance in middle
school. Shots may be obtained from a doctor, military clinic, or the
Prince William County Health Department. Please bring
documentation of immunizations received to the Tyler school
office. Immunization records will be forwarded to the middle
school with other student records in late June.
