Elementary School Curriculum

The Prince William County Public Schools English Language Arts program promotes the development of a continuum of literacy skills and strategies for students in kindergarten through grade twelve. This continuum includes processes critical to reading, writing, speaking, listening, information management, and the use of technology.

The Prince William County Public Schools English Language Arts Curriculum is the 2017 Virginia English Standards of Learning Curriculum Framework. In grades K-12 the Curriculum Framework is organized by the strands of Communication, Reading, Writing, and Research.

 

Grade K

The Grade Level Guide provides explanations and access for Language Arts documents.

Kindergarten students will develop their oral language by learning to listen, speak, and follow the rules for conversation. They will participate in individual, small group, and whole class discussions and activities. Being exposed to a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction texts, students will develop an awareness of print material while developing an appreciation for literature. They will enhance oral language and communication skills, phonological and print awareness, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Grade 1

The Grade Level Guide provides explanations and access for Language Arts documents.

First grade students will develop oral language skills, phonetic skills, vocabulary, comprehension, and an understanding of print material. They will use listening and speaking skills to participate in classroom discussions and activities. They will apply strategies to read new words and will read with fluency and expression. Students will increase vocabulary and comprehension strategies as they read across the content areas. They will read and comprehend fiction and nonfiction and will write to share ideas.

Grade 2

The Grade Level Guide provides explanations and access for Language Arts documents.

Second grade students will use effective communication skills and develop vocabulary through speaking and listening. They will read fiction and nonfiction related to all curriculum areas and interests and will apply a variety of strategies to identify words and determine their meanings. The students will strengthen their comprehension skills and apply these skills in all subjects. They will write stories, letters, and explanations and edit their writing. The students will transition to cursive writing in second grade. They will use technology and media resources to gather information to share in a report.

Grade 3

The Grade Level Guide provides explanations and access for Language Arts documents.

Third grade students will use effective communication skills in group activities. They will increase their learning about words, reading text with fluency and expression, and learning comprehension strategies. They will read fiction and nonfiction texts related to the curriculum and apply reading strategies across all content areas. The students will plan, draft, revise and edit stories, explanations, and short reports. They will gather and use information from print and electronic sources to create and present an oral report.

Grade 4
