STUDENTS EXCEL IN MATH TOURNAMENT Prince William County Public Schools recently held its fourth annual Mathematics Challenge 24 Tournament. The countywide event was held at Godwin Middle School on Saturday, May 1, 2004. Students from grades three through eight participated in grade-level competitions at their individual schools in order to earn the distinction of representing their school at the tournament. The following students are the 2004 Prince William County Challenge 24 Tournament winners. Grade 3: Aidan Lancaster, Marshall, first place; Eric Jamieson, Westridge, second place; Monique DeLeon, King, third place; Kelly Martin, King, fourth place. Grade 4: Elizabeth Steele, Westridge, first place; Jefferson Thompson, Westridge, second place; Chloe Lancaster, Marshall, third place; Justin Cantalupo, Marshall, fourth place. Grade 5: Fatima Ali, Springwoods, first place; Angela Ruf, Kerrydale, second place; Chris Lopez, Tyler, third place; Zac Stinnett, Springwoods, fourth place. Grade 6: John Rodriquez, Lake Ridge, first place; Nelson Fu, Lake Ridge, second place; Mary White, Beville, third place; Christine DeLeon, Beville, fourth place. Grade 7: Stephanie Galarza, Lake Ridge, first place; Michael Malakoff, Beville, second place; Amanda Kann, Godwin, third place; Andrea Madu, Godwin, fourth place. Grade 8: Ralph Ababio, Rippon, first place; Justin Brennan, Rippon, second place. The Prince William County Public Schools Mathematics Challenge 24 program
uses the innovative “24” game to make mathematics more appealing, accessible,
and, most of all, fun, says Carol Knight, supervisor of mathematics for
County schools. Students not only practice mathematics computation
in the areas of whole numbers, fractions, decimals, exponents, and algebra,
they become adept at mental math, communicating mathematically, validating
their thinking, and recognizing multiple ways to solve problems.
