Steven L. Walts is beginning his fifth year as Superintendent of Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) – one of the country’s largest and fastest growing school systems. For the 2009-10 school year, PWCS will have over 75,000 students, 88 schools, 10,000 employees, and is the second largest school division in Virginia.

Following a whirlwind journey in the 2005-06 school year to visit and learn about all 82 Prince William County schools in 82 days, Dr. Walts turned his focus to maximizing student learning. Initiatives under his leadership include improving Virginia Standards of Learning test scores and completing the move to Divisionwide full-day kindergarten two years ahead of schedule. PWCS now boasts aggressive efforts to combat bullying, boost SAT scores, increase the graduation rate, improve school safety, and to work with educational partners to mentor Today’s Students to become Tomorrow’s Teachers. With ever-stronger efforts to recruit and retain the best and brightest educators and encourage high school students to take the rigorous Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and Cambridge courses, Dr. Walts is leading the School Division to achieving its mission of Providing A World-Class Education for every student.

Dr. Walts served as Superintendent of Schools in Greece, New York, from 1998 to 2005. He also was an adjunct professor and program coordinator for the Canisius College administrative programs in Greece. From 1992 to 1998, he served in Baltimore County, Maryland as the Assistant Superintendent, Northwest Area, and as the Assistant Superintendent/Executive Director, Department of Human Resources.

A native of Great Bend, Kansas, Dr. Walts received his doctorate in Education Policy and Leadership from the University of Maryland in 2002. He began his teaching career as an elementary teacher and building principal in Wichita, Kansas. He resides in Prince William County with his wife and young daughter – who is beginning first-grade at Marshall Elementary School.
