CAROL BASS EARNS HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD

Carol Bass, Supervisor of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and Foreign Language for Prince William County Public Schools, has received a Human Rights Award from the Prince William County Human Rights Commission.  The awards are presented each year to individuals who have demonstrated leadership in human rights in Prince William County.  Bass was recognized for promoting equality in education for ESOL students.

According to the Commission, five awards are given each year to candidates, chosen from across Prince William County, whose “effectiveness and courage have advanced the cause of equality for all people of all ages in significant and substantial ways that have enriched our community.”

The school division offers ESOL services to any student in kindergarten through grade 12 for whom English is not the primary language and whose English is not adequate to function successfully in the regular subject areas.  Identified students attend one of the 52 ESOL centers located through the county in elementary, middle and high schools. ESOL students receive an average of one to four hours of English content-based instruction per day as the primary program model.  Transitional bilingual content, biliteracy, and sheltered-content classes in core areas of language arts, math, science, and social studies are offered when viable.  Instruction is offered through pull-out, inclusion and resource as appropriate until a student can meet passing requirements in mainstream classes independently.  ESOL students represent approximately 105 languages and cultures from throughout the world.

Bass will be recognized for her accomplishment at a School Board meeting later this month.
