OSBOURN PARK STUDENT SELECTED FOR STUDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The Virginia Board of Education has selected Andrew T. McCormack, a junior at Osbourn Park High School, to serve as a member of the Student Advisory Committee for 2003-2004.  Andrew, the son of Bill and Patti McCormack, attended Westridge Elementary School and Woodbridge Middle School.

An honor roll student, Andrew received the Virginia High School League Academic Excellence Award in VHSL Interscholastic Activities and a Varsity Letter in swimming.  A member of Varsity Swimming, Key Club, DECA, Prince William County Youth Salute and SADD, he was also a member of the freshman football team, JV tennis team, SCA Freshman Class President, Homecoming Committee, and Hi-Jacket Yearbook.  Andrew is a lifeguard, a member of the Westridge Waves Swim Team, and involved with the Prince William County Office on Youth and Manassas Young Life.

He would like to attend Virginia Tech, North Carolina State University or Auburn University and major in business, law or political science.

Established in 2000, the Student Advisory Committee acts as a liaison between students and the Board of Education to voice concerns and issues facing students, offers a fresh perspective to board members and establishes a collective voice to provide feasible solutions.  The Student Advisory Committee is comprised of eight junior or senior public high school students, each representing a geographical region of the state, and four at-large middle school members.  This year the Student Advisory Committee will present the need for a stronger guidance program in the schools to the Board of Education.  The proposal will also include extending drug prevention programs, establishing closer relations with the guidance counselors, and increasing career opportunities.

According to Margaret Roberts, Executive Assistant at the Department of Education, most of the recommendations of the previous student committees have already been implemented or are well under way.  “The members of the Board of Education are very serious about listening to the advice and counsel of the Student Advisory Committee,” she says.
