KING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RECEIVES VSCA ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School has received the Virginia Student Councils Association (VSCA) Achievement Award for the second consecutive year.  Only 45 schools in Virginia were awarded with this distinction.

Student Council Advisor Leanne Thomas said that the students worked on eight projects this year including two food drives for ACTS, collecting over 1,500 food items; December Dollars, donating over $850 to help seven families within the school have a brighter holiday season; selling Valentine’s Day Surprises, candy bars with a poem attached for students to take home to loved ones; contributing 30 pounds of Pop-tops from aluminum cans for the Ronald McDonald House in Fairfax; Box-tops for Education proceeds, used to purchase a popcorn machine; Spirit Day and Spirit Week; and staffing the School Store.

Each year, the VSCA honors member schools who promote leadership and community service through their school’s Student Council activities.  The honorees are selected by the VSCA Advisory Committee and the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals Board of Directors.  Eligibility requirements for elementary schools include a minimum of five projects; middle school, six projects; and high schools, seven projects.  Required categories included a statewide project dealing with “Together We Can Build a Stronger Future” and “Pop-Top” Collection for Charity.
